I get this question more than almost any other: “Paola, what does it actually feel like to stay in a fully-staffed villa? Is it like being in a hotel, but without other guests?”

I understand the hesitation. For most of us, having a private chef, a housekeeper, and a villa manager all under the same roof sounds either impossibly glamorous or slightly uncomfortable. The truth, in my experience, is neither — and it’s worth explaining why.

Over the years, I’ve personally stayed in staffed villas from Puglia to Tuscany, the Côte d’Azur to Barbados, and I can tell you: when it’s done well, a fully-staffed villa doesn’t feel like a hotel, and it doesn’t feel like an intrusion. It feels like being the guest of honour in a home that happens to be extraordinary.

You wake up to silence — real silence, not the muffled noise of a hotel corridor. The villa is already quietly alive. Your housekeeper has tidied the terrace and laid out fresh towels by the pool. The smell of coffee drifts up from the kitchen.

Your chef — who you will have spoken with the evening before — has planned breakfast around your preferences. Fresh fruit, local pastries, eggs cooked exactly how you like them. There’s no menu. There’s no queue. There’s no scrambled egg station under a heat lamp.

If you have children, this moment alone makes everything worth it. While the adults linger over coffee, the kids are already in the pool, and nobody is rushing anyone to check out.

Midday: The Art of Being Left Alone

Here’s what surprises most of my clients: a well-run staffed villa doesn’t feel busy with people. The staff are discreet in a way that takes genuine skill. They anticipate — fresh towels appear, drinks are refilled, the table is laid for lunch — but you rarely see it happening. It’s quiet choreography.

Your chef is preparing a dinner that could, frankly, rival a Michelin-starred restaurant, using ingredients sourced that morning from the local market.

Around a long outdoor table, your family or group gathers. There are no phones. No service to wait for. No bill to split. Just food, wine, the warm evening air, and people you love.

This is what I mean when I say a staffed villa changes the quality of a holiday. The friction disappears. What’s left is pure experience.

What About Any “Awkward” Part?

I won’t pretend there’s no adjustment. The first evening, guests sometimes feel a little self-conscious. Do I ask for more wine or wait? Should I clear my own plate?
