The Owners are excited to share the place they fell in love with after a trip to Andalusia. Following an extensive, loving restoration of the estate and grounds, its two spectacular properties and its breathtaking setting soon attracted the notice of the international style and travel press. The passion and commitment of the hosts shines through in every detail.

Both properties are within walls and approached by a verdant courtyard entrance. El Carligto is flooded with natural light and offers airy living space, whilst also having two large fireplaces, one inside, one outdoors, for winter cosiness. In a nod to the farmhouse that once stood there, the 'rustic luxe' summer kitchen is the perfect place to sample fresh local produce. It leads directly out into the lovely pool area and sheltered spa cabana.

Within El Carligto, there are four gorgeous double bedrooms, two of them en-suite, as well as a separate bathroom. The master bedroom's en-suite has a pretty balcony terrace, refreshing outdoor shower, and a hammam-influenced bath. The property has luxurious bedding and linens and hand-stitched tapestries.

The quirky and stylish Hunting Lodge is in a more elevated position than El Carligto. Inside it has a spacious, elegant living area. There are three double bedrooms, all en-suite, and a useful additional guest bathroom. Art Deco furnishings and antiques blend charmingly with modern comforts and local artwork and crafts in the Hunting Lodge as they do within El Carligto. Set within its tranquil terraced gardens is a pool offering stunning views.

How to get there

The Estate of Cortijo El Carligto sits atop its own stunning private hilltop 800 metres above sea level, overlooking the unspoilt, timeless Spanish landscape of La Axarquia. Whilst benefiting from this secluded splendour, the stylish, vibrant hubs of Malaga and Marbella are also within easy reach.

Our local village (4 km, 5-10 min) marks the start of the Mudehar route, a string of Moorish white-washed villages distinguishable by the Mudehar architecture reflective of their rich history, and nestled amongst the slopes of Maroma, the tallest peak in the region. An excellent driving tour stretching some 25 km to Competa.

The cliffs and beaches around Nerja (40 km, 40 min) are among the most stunning of the southern coast, while Nerja itself is great for shopping and dining. Yet the nearest beaches, in Torre del Mar, are only about 25 km away and reachable within half an hour. Maricuchi on Pedregalejo beach offers a quintessential experience of this part of Spain. Adored by local families, huge plates of sardine skewers, clams and prawns are dished up to be eaten right by the sea.

Malaga, at 50 km, offers a surprising level of sophistication and culture, cosmopolitan street life, dining and shopping. The old Moorish Alcazaba, the cathedral and the botanical garden are some of the highlights.

Granada and the famous Alhambra are accessible for a day trip at 100 km (1 hour 15 min), as are the ancient Cordoba Mosque (170 km, about 1 hour 45 min) and the wonders of Seville (220 km, about 2 hours).

Malaga and the surrounding area has a number of exceptional restaurants, representing many different nations and styles. Its coastal location puts seafood near the top of the list. Buzzing informality combines with seriously high calibre and ambitious cooking at Marisqueria Jacinto. Of the many places to go for great tapas, La Cosmopolita has been attracting the in crowd for many years now.

For those wishing to experiment with cooking the local produce, Atarazanas Market in Malaga offers a dazzling array of charcuterie, fresh fish and fruits and vegetable, to fire any amateur chef's imagination.

The Estate can bespoke a large number of magical and unforgettable experiences centring on the region's many attractions. A trip to Granada offers the unmissable chance to take in two UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the Alhambra Palace and the Albayzin.

Malaga has earned a reputation as something of a gastronomic centre, and food tours of both Granada and Malaga offer a fascinating, and tasty, introduction to the region's cuisine and delicacies. Tours of wineries and olive oil presses are also a way to learn more about the region's exceptional produce.

El Caminito dey Rey offers the best hiking in the area, and in winter it is possible to ski on the majestic Sierra Nevada.
