Destination: ItalyDestinationsFamily Travel Umbria…for the Uninitiated by Paola Fiocchi Van den Brande May 15, 2019 written by Paola Fiocchi Van den Brande Italy is without doubt one of our most popular and most requested destinations. With a seductive combination of rustic simplicity & urban grandeur; together with homespun charm & cultural sophistication, it appeals to all. The choice of accommodation is amongst the best in the world; including rustic farmhouses, luxury villas, Renaissance mansions, and even castles. Yet despite the diversity, certain areas of Italy, like glorious Umbria, sometimes get overlooked, in favour of Tuscany or Puglia. Beautiful view of the old town of Orvieto Yet Umbria is a joy to visit. Having emerged late to international attention, this special part of Italy has retained its authenticity. Umbria has pretty much everything a visitor could ask for, yet admittedly it doesn’t have a coastline. The wealth of history and heritage together with uncrowded pastoral countryside and some of the best food in Italy, does in our opinion, more than compensate for the lack of a beach. Also, all our Umbria properties have refreshing, sparkling swimming pools. For those seeking to be wowed by history and culture, well Umbria can certainly boast plenty of medieval and renaissance art, and the most enchanting hill-top towns. The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta is the main place (Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta. Duomo di Spoleto) and Medieval Fortress (Rocca Albornoziana) Spoleto Assisi, birthplace of St. Francis, is probably the best- known medieval town in Umbria. This UNESCO protected heritage site features the impressive St. Francis’s Basilica, with its renowned frescoes; as well as gothic castles and beautiful churches. Castello Bonaparte The surrounding countryside is amongst our favourite in Italy and its where you’ll find ‘Castello Bonaparte’, a luxury medieval Umbrian castle available for holiday rental through Passepartout Homes. Be the king of all you survey, at this spectacular 1500-acre estate. With 7 bedrooms and 9 bathrooms, this super-luxury, renovated medieval castle is perfect for 15 guests; great for a multigenerational family holiday, or an amazing get-away with friends. Expect stunning interiors, superb facilities, a romantic interior courtyard (just perfect for candle-lit dinners) and even an infinity saltwater pool. The private estate is there for picnics, leisurely walks, hikes and biking. The staff and concierge for the estate will help make your stay extra special. Perugia San Francesco d’Assisi – Umbria International Airport is less than half an hour’s drive away. Castello Bonaparte Umbria is not only physically at the heart of Italy; it was also central to the country’s history. Escaping conflict in Rome, and before relocating to Avignon in the early 1300s, the Popes came to Umbria. The extraordinary hill-top town of Orvieto was the refuge for 5 popes, putting this town very much on the religious, cultural and artistic map. The town is striking as you approach, set upon a huge outcrop of volcanic rock surrounded by fertile countryside. The honey-coloured fortified medieval town clusters around its remarkable 14th century Duomo and extends right to the cliff edge. It’s the sort of fairy-tale scene that really can only be enjoyed in Italy, and especially here in the heart of the country. The cathedral is one of the internationally renowned monuments in the town. Yet this is so much more than a religious building; it is a gallery of fine art. Carvings, sculptures and frescos depict more than iconic stories, they showcase priceless artistry that has influenced and shaped the cultural story of Italy. Villa Caterina Less than an hour from Orvieto one can find ‘Villa Caterina’, a luxury Umbrian villa available for holiday rental through Passepartout Homes. Villa Caterina This 7-bedroom, 7-bathroom home has recently been renovated, creating a spectacular retreat for 14 guests. The accommodation is spacious and includes a self-contained apartment. This beautiful villa is surrounded by a large landscaped garden with swimming pool, loungers, dining table, charcoal BBQ, gazebo with dining table for 16 guests, as well as a wood oven. It’s a wonderful place to enjoy alfresco meals. Perugia San Francesco d’Assisi – Umbria International Airport is 20 minutes’ drive away2 Eating in Italy is of course one of the great pleasures of holidaying here, and in Umbria most restaurants are still family owned and run, offering some truly special home-cooked food. The focus is on fresh ingredients, like lake trout; seasonal produce including local truffles; bold flavours like local pecorino cheese; and hearty generous portions. All perfect with a glass of Umbrian wine – salute! Villa Torretta in San Giovanni del Pantano More inspiration Please remember, we are here to help you create your perfect holiday! Destination: SpainDestinationsExperiencesFamily TravelTravel Tips Bring your teenage kids to Barcelona by Paola Fiocchi Van den Brande March 8, 2019 written by Paola Fiocchi Van den Brande Why even your teenage kids would want to go back to Barcelona. We finally managed to find a city even my teenage daughters truly enjoyed, begging us to return. Barcelona provides the right balance of art and culture, entertainment and shopping, food scene and positive Mediterranean vibes. During our trip to Barcelona in February, we were blessed with the most amazing sunny and mild weather. This helped of course, as I doubt we would have brought back such long-lasting memories if we visited the capital of Catalunya under the rain or freezing temperatures. Instead, we hardly saw a cloud in 4 days and we managed to wear shoes without socks, which for us, who live in a less clement climate, meant everything. We found a cool, metropolitan boutique hotel a few minutes from Plaza de Catalunya, Yurbban Passage, with a rooftop pool and terrace commanding stunning views of the city and the sea, a lovely spa with indoor heated plunge pool and organic treatments, a very well-equipped gym and a restaurant run by a Michelin star chef. From here, you can reach many sites on foot and even our rides in official taxis were no more than €10 each to cross the city. The taxi rides includes a complimentary commentary, all in Spanish, about the current political climate in Catalunya! There you go, free lesson for your kids! Uber is also available if you need to drive long-distances at a better fee, but no fun political facts included. The roof terrace at Yurbban Passage For kids not so much interested in art and culture and drawn more to the local Zara and Urban Outfitters shops, Fundació Joan Miró will manage to grab their attention and capture their imagination. The Museum, located up on the hills in the quiet and leafy Parc de Montjuïc, is a cool space to discover the marvels of the eclectic Spanish artist. Even teenagers who find art boring, will recognize the uniqueness and genius in Miro. From the museum gardens and terraces, you can enjoy a 180 degree view of Barcelona beneath. Fondacio Joan Miro From here you can easily reach La Barceloneta, Barcelona’s beach, either by taxi, bus or cable car. When we were there the cable car was closed for repairs, such a shame as I am sure it would have bit fun. Gaudi’s House in Park Guell La Barceloneta’s neighborhood was constructed during the 18th century for the residents of the Ribera neighborhood who had been displaced by the construction of the Ciutadella of Barcelona. Locals head to Barceloneta to surf, sunbathe or have a light snack. We had a fantastic alfresco lunch at a laid back and casual bar/restaurant close to the beach, Surf House Barcelona, serving healthy; freshly pressed juices, cocktails, a rich breakfast menu including bowls, pancakes or yoghurts, freshly prepared salads, burritos, tacos, burgers and a selection of desserts including Triple Nutella (three slices of bread with Nutella!). Park Guell From here, you can easily walk to either one of the largest Desigual stores you can ever imagine, Maremagnum II, or for those more culturally inclined, head to Santa Maria del Mar Gothic church, whose huge pillars and vaults are jaw dropping. La Sagrada Familia You cannot visit Barcelona without visiting La Sagrada Familia. The unfinished masterpiece by Gaudí is still under construction, believe it or not!!! Consecrated and proclaimed ‘basilica’ by Pop Benedivt XVI in 2010, the Roman Catholic church was started in 1882 by architect Francisco de Paula del Villar. In 1883, when Villar resigned, Catalan Gaudí took over as chief architect, transforming the project with his irrefutable style, combining Gothic and Art Nouveau forms. Prepare to be mesmerized. We entered the church at 4.00pm when the sun light was beaming through the glasswork. Nothing prepares you, the experience is deeply moving. Book your entrance tickets in advance,ce. We used a booking site called Tiqets. La Sagrada Familia If the weather is sunny and skies are clear, head to Park Güell, a park with an enthusiastic and colorful fusion of nature and architecture. Don’t forget to sit on one of Gaudi’s most Instagrammable benches. From here, you can easily walk down to Gracia. Park Guell Young teenagers may still enjoy the Aquarium, before Nemo gets old and boring as well. Bored of Barcelona? I doubt, but just in case, take a train. An hour from the city, your kids may enjoy theme parks such as PortAventura , Ferrari Land in Cambrils or swimming with tunas in Salou! Hungry? You won’t be left starving in Spain. Options are endless! Our favorite places: Mediamanga, www.mediamanga.es, Aribau 13, Barcelona: gourmet Spanish food and excellent wine list. Places are very limited, reservations a must. Mont Bar, www.montbar.com, situated next to Mediamanga, Carrer de la Diputació 220. Michelin star. Avant-guard traditional Spanish. Reserve well in advance. Flax & Kale, Passage de les Manufactures, @flaxandkale. Healthy, clean eating with a large selection of gluten-free food. ChichaLimoná, Passeig de San Joan. Spectacular breakfasts! Shopping: Nuovum, El Raval, C. Pintor Fortuny 30, 08001 Barcelona. Concept store featuring upcoming Spanish designers. I had the pleasure of interviewing our ultra-glamorous and Brussels connoisseur friend, Paola Carattoli Di Clemente, who definitely knows a thing or two about the coolest places to eat in Brussels. Here are Paola’s recommendations. You won’t be disappointed. La Table Rustique Breakfast La Table Rustique, located along the chic Avenue Louise. Great for reading the morning papers while eating a healthy and delicious breakfast. Start your morning at La Table Rustique, located in the Louise area. A cozy spot, it’s where you can relax and read your newspaper while nibbling on breakfast. Offering delicious breakfast options, all with healthy portions, in a serene setting, there’s no better way to start your day. It’s excellent for both small or large or groups, and in the summer, eat alfresco on the terrace in the back garden. La Table Rustique Brunch Comptoir Rodin , great venue for a top brunch! Nestled between Ixelles and Etterbeek is the cozy Comptoir Rodin. This is the ideal place to meet up with friends and family over good coffee and brunch, within a space that has character and a unique ambience. Comptoir Rodin Offering simple, homemade seasonal cuisine that would win over the most discerning taste, including vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and organic options. Their Israeli-born and Brussels-based chef creates fusion dishes, including a large variety of salads, an assortment of pastries, and a lavish all-you-can eat weekend brunch buffet – all made with high-quality ingredients and local, seasonal products. (Note: We recommend making reservations at least a week in advance, especially for weekend brunch). Comptoir Rodin Lunch Odette en Ville , ideal spot for lunch in the heart of Chatelain. Odette en Ville For lunch, head over to Odette en Ville. Strategically located in the heart of Chatelain, this upscale brasserie is a milieu of refined elegance with its crisp white linens, candlelit tables, and warm décor, combined with a menu composed of classics with some modern twists. The menu revolves around the quality of the best ingredients the season has to offer. A simple, refined cuisine, the menu changes with the seasons, yet offers up classics all year round. BahamasDestination: CaribbeanDestinationsExperiencesFamily TravelHoneymoon destinations Postcards from The Exumas by Paola Fiocchi Van den Brande June 10, 2018 written by Paola Fiocchi Van den Brande When I first visited The Exumas in 2015, I did not know what to expect. Holidaymakers I met once in Turks & Caicos told me I was setting my bar very high and that no other Caribbean Island was as beautiful as Turks&Caicos. Well, I can prove those holidaymakers wrong as I was blown away by the beauty of Exuma. A tropical paradise surrounded by sapphire-blue water and footprint-free fine white sandy beaches. Exuma Airport. Not quite Heathrow T5! The Exumas are an archipelago of no less than 365 cays and islands, located 35 miles southeast of Nassau, divided into three main areas: Great Exuma, Little Exuma and The Exuma Cays. With 365 cays and islands there is now way I could have visited them all in one week, or ever. I probably managed to see 3 of them! We stayed at the luxury resort Grand Isle Resort and Spa, a collection of 78 large villas on Emerald Bay, the same bay where once the Four Seasons Hotel was also located now a Sandals Resort. I highly recommend this resort for those looking for luxury hotel amenities such as pool, fitness, restaurant and golf course, combined with the privacy, space and comfort of your own villa. Grand Isle Resort and Spa After a very early but short fly from Nassau, we landed on Exuma, where the airport consists of a small house and luggage is delivered to you by tractor (I have photos to prove it!!!). We recommend you rent a car to move around as taxis are prohibitively expensive. Expect a laid back lifestyle, friendly people and flawless sandy beaches, although, hidden away are luxury villas owned by the rich and famous. Collecting sand dollars WHAT TO DO Definitely hire a boat for island hopping and to reach remote, deserted islands. There are also several organised boat tours you can join. We typically hired our own boat for more flexibility and independence although we joined an organised tour to experience the famous “swimming pigs” on Major’s Spot Cay and to reach Allen Cay island whose only residents are iguanas. Swimming with the pigs and feeding them is an adventure on its own, definitely unique to The Exumas, which can be fun for both adults and kids alike. Not to miss is lunch at “Chat ‘N’ Chill“, a beach restaurant serving fresh conch salad, grilled fish and meat and tropical cocktails. A very casual, bare foot vibe for a very relaxing day on the beach. It can be reached by boat, a 10 minutes ride from Elizabeth Harbour. One of the most picturesque and unspoiled beaches is the Tropic of Cancer Beach. Located at 23 26N 75 35W, the beach is named after the meridian line that defines the northern extent of the tropics and crosses right through it. Tropic of Cancer WHEN TO GO Summers in the Bahamas can be humid and rainy, with daytime temperatures reaching about 40 degrees. Hurricane season runs typically from July to October. Although the beaches are crowded, the best time to go is during the high season, which runs from November to mid-April. We went at the beginning of August, just before hotels were closing down for the start of the low season. We enjoyed a calm and peaceful island , empty beaches and reduced hotel fees (always a bonus!). June 10, 2018 0 comments 0 FacebookTwitterPinterestEmail
Adventure TravelDestinationsFamily TravelTravel Tips Postcards from the island of Schiermonnikoog by Paola Fiocchi Van den Brande May 29, 2018 written by Paola Fiocchi Van den Brande Greetings from Schiermonnikoog, the unpronounceable Dutch Frisian island, a sort of “Dutch Hamptons”. Literally its name can be translated into “Grey Monk Island” . The island’s first known inhabitants were the monks of Klaarkamp Abbey, a Cistercian monastery near Rinsumageest, on the mainland. “Monnik” means “monk”, “schier” is an archaic word meaning “grey”, referring to the colour of the monks’ habits, and “oog” translates as “island”. 16 Km of fine, white sandy beaches A National Park of breathtaking natural beauty, the island, 16 Km long and 4 Km wide, can only be reached on foot or by bike taking a ferry from the mainland. Only vehicles with a special permit are allowed to travel to the island making it a safe and green place to spend a relaxing holiday. Although there are less than 1000 people living permanently on Schiermonnikoog, during holiday season up 4000 visitors flock to the island daily. Fun fact: thanks to the tidal current, the prevailing winds, and North Sea storms, the island is slowly moving to the south and the east. In the year 1250, it lays roughly 2 km to the north of its present position, and it then had a significantly different shape. I have been visiting the island since 1995 and I have experienced first hand its metamorphosis including formation of new dunes, lakes or beaches turning into fields. This is the perfect destination for families, nature lovers, bird watchers, hikers, and those who love to spend their day outdoors. The village centre If you chose to spend a few days on the island, there are many vacation rentals, B&Bs, Inns, hotels to choose from. There aren’t any true luxury places to stay. The island offers a vary practical and essential approach to luxury. Think “bring your own bedlinen or rent them at extra cost” type of service. If you are passionate about food, you may find it hard to find a restaurant to satisfy your demanding palate, although Graaf Bernstorff cooks a very decent steak with French fries and a very acceptable apple pie for an afternoon tea stopover. Days are spent biking around the island along its kilometres-long bike routes, hiking in the forests, walking or flying kites on the beach and horse riding. Enjoy a few photos taken during our last visit in May. Once on Schier, its friendly name, you will want to return again and again. For places to stay: Visit the Office of Tourism of the Island of Schiermonnikoog: https://www.vvvschiermonnikoog.nl There is a varied selection of self-catering apartments, cottages, inns, B&Bs, campings and hotels. Book well in advance as the island offers just 5500 beds which get booked up a year in advance in peak season. We stayed at Strandresort Schier luxury apartments: https://www.strandresortschier.nl/. The resort offers a heated pool, saunas and the option of a luxury breakfast delivered to your apartment. WiFi in the apartment was not strong enough for me to work however there is a table in the lobby with a stronger signal. The absence of a closet to hang my clothes was slightly inconvenient as I like to unpack and settle as soon as I arrive at my destination. The resort is however brand new, clean and centrally located so you can reach the centre of the village or the beaches in no time. For places to eat: We recommend the restaurant at the Hotel Graaf Bernstorff, probably the best restaurant on the island. Great also for apple pies and vanilla ice cream in the afternoon. For a gin and tonic at sunset head to the beach restaurant De Marlijn. How to get there: You will need to drive to Lauwersoog and leave your car at the car park terminal. A ferry service provided by the company Wagenborg runs several times a day to the island and back. Only pedestrians and bicycles are allowed on the boat. The trip by ferry lasts approximately 45 minutes, depending on the tides. Ferry tickets can be purchased online or at the ticket desk at the terminal. For the ferry timetable visit here: http://www.wpd.nl Once you step off the ferry, you can take a bus or a private taxi to reach your destination. Once on the island, the easiest way to get around is by bike. There are several bike rental shops in the village centre. Destination: family-friendly villasDestination: ItalyFamily Travel Five of the Best Masserie in Puglia by Paola Fiocchi Van den Brande March 6, 2018 written by Paola Fiocchi Van den Brande Masserie are characteristically Puglian manor houses which formed the heart of rural estates. Today, many of them have been converted to luxury residences, but they retain their timeless charm as a feature of the countryside in this very special part of Italy. They once housed local nobility and their guests, but were also part of working farms, with arable land, gardens, stables and staff living quarters. The most sympathetically restored masserie have retained some of these evocative features, whilst also offering the highest spec modern comforts. Masseria Della Croce enjoys a lovely setting in Putignano. This seventeenth century property is steeped in history, with tales of Benedictine monks and Knights Malta enjoying it as a place to stay. Today its nods to its past include a piano in the living room and a stunning fireplace. The complimentary welcome drink on arrival sets the tone for the decadent pleasures on offer, from the stunning pool to a hot tub in the master bedroom, as well as an outdoor shower and original wood-fired oven. Masseria della Croce Antica Masseria del Fano, near Salve, is a historically important mansion with a landmark tower building and parts dating back to 1577. Perfect for a festive gathering of friends or family, it has spectacular sea views, a lovely circular pool and sun deck, and an evocative setting inside a forty-hectare park. The ancient village of Salve dates back to at least the Bronze Age, and fascinating fortifications and churches are amongst its many historical survivals. Masseria del Fano Masseria Saracino is situated in Martano, the biggest town in Grecia Salentina, fabled for its lovely medieval cathedral and lively festivals. A hugely characterful property, Masseria Saracino has expertly converted historic elements into quirky, appealing contemporary features. The dry-stone walls are now used to frame the expansive terraces, and the little trullo next to the house is now a useful pantry. Like the masseria themselves, trulli are a familiar and beloved feature in this part of Italy. Small, round stone constructions with a conical roof, they have a fairy tale village look about them. Masseria Saracino Another wonderful property takes its name from the trulli, Masseria Il Trullino. The villa lies within a five-acre olive grove, which produces notably fine quality olive oil. Intriguingly, although the olive grove is over four hundred years old, Masseria Il Trullino is newly built. Expertly crafted from Pietra Leccese, the local stone, it showcases arches, vaulted ceiling and a grand internal courtyard. The panoramic roof terrace makes the most of the breath-taking rural views. Perfecting relaxed luxury for families, amenities include a huge infinity pool, children’s playground, trampoline and a kitchen garden providing fresh vegetables and herbs. Masseria Il Trullino A truly imposing manor house, Masseria Don Agostino Salento comfortably accommodates up to thirteen guests. With origins dating back to 1860, today it comprises five self-contained luxury suites. The 70 square metres infinity pool includes a whirlpool. Swimming and sunbathing is framed by a fragrant and classically Mediterranean olive and fruit tree grove. Its location in the province of Lecce offers easy access to some of Italy’s greatest cultural and natural treasures, from the striking Baroque architecture of the city of Lecce to the San Cantaldo nature reserve and Alimini Lakes. Masseria Don Agostino The masserie are a cherished and inspiring part of the fabric of Puglia, where countryside, history and legend are forever intertwined.
