We personally recommend the Brut Rosé made with Negroamaro and Chardonnay grapes, great with appetisers and seafood. We also tried and liked Bolina Verdeca del Salento, a white dry wine made with Verdeca and Chardonnay grapes, again great with seafood.

The shopping guide to Lecce

by Paola Fiocchi Van den Brande March 1, 2023
written by Paola Fiocchi Van den Brande

Lecce is no Milan, Florence or Rome, with their haute-couture designer boutiques, trendy cocktail bars and international hotels . There are no Prada or Armani stores nor Michelin star restaurants, although there are some which arguably deserve a star or two.

Lecce is more about authenticity, farm-to-table menus, slow living and simplicity.

I had the pleasure of sitting down with Margherita Caputo in front of a plate of pasta with fresh tomatoes and zucchini. She is an architect who lives not far from Lecce and is Property Manager of Masseria Mauriani in Carpignano Salentino.
Margherita walked me through her favourite shops in Lecce, the ones not mentioned in the tourist guides, of course!

Ijo’ Design

The brand was found by Margherita’s childhood friend, Annalisa Surace. Annalisa creates contemporary and stylish artisanal apparels and accessories using local textiles: coats, scarfs, dresses as well as cushions or jewellery in natural materials and neutral color palettes.

Showroom: via Palmieri n. 47-49 in Lecce. Ijo’ Design is also in Ostuni.

Artefatto L’Idea in Terracotta

Angelo creates artifacts and decorations in terracotta and majolica taking inspiration from the colours, sounds and perfumes of Salento. His ceramics are fun and colourful and include murals, kitchen utensils, key rings, house number tags, pottery, plates, photo albums and much more. His laboratory is definitely worth a visit.

The shop in Lecce is now closed but you can still visit the one located in Castro, Piazza del Vescovado 2.

Re di Quadri

Re di Quadri is the shop to go for original and refined artisanal artifacts; a store where you can take home traditional furnishing such as the ’pumo portafortuna”, a lucky charm ceramic knob which comes in various bright shiny colours. The Pumo or Pomo is a traditional Apulian artisanal artifact originally from the town of Grottaglie and represents a rose bud about to bloom, symbolising something coming to new life. The Pomo is traditionally offered as a good luck omen to someone starting a new business, moving into a new home, starting something new in life.

Shop: Re di Quadri, via Vittorio Emanuele II 66, Lecce.

Paola Barrotta

Hand-made original contemporary jewellery for both men and women. A third-generation goldsmith, Paola worked in Rome, NY, Bologna and Lecce for major companies where she could put her Italian craftsmanship at the service of international maisons. In 2004 she opened her first studio/concept store in Lecce, where you can experience goldsmiths at work.

Studio and concept store: Via Arcivescovo Petronelli 12, Lecce.

https://www.paolabarrotta.com/

Sand 02

Punto Verde Vivai

Not far from Lecce, in Melendugno, you can visit the garden centre Punto Verde Vivai. You will not only find local plants such as a large variety of fig and other fruit trees, but also flower pots in stone as well as home-made products such as marmalades, jams, various types of preserves, legumes, dried figs, durum what pasta by Senatore Cappelli, “friselle” and other Apulian delicatessen.

Address: Prov.le Melendugno-Borgagne km. 1, Melendugno.

Liberrima

An independent book store, a wine and food shop, coffee bar and All’Ombra del Barocco wine bar and restaurant located right at the heart of the old town in Lecce, steps from the Cathedral and Piazza Sant’Oronzo. Under one roof you can wander among books, have a coffee scrolling through magazines and papers, buy wine and local delicatessen or sit down for a slow-food Apulian meal. The book shop is stocked with a vast selection of books for adults and a rich dedicated section for kids. The wine shop offers a comprehensive list of Apulian and Italian wines whilst in the grocery store you can take home sweets, “taralli”, “frise”, pasta and extra virgin olive oil. There are regular events held at Liberrima, hosted both in the restaurant and in the book store, from workshops to meetings with prominent Italian authors. The best address in Lecce for a relaxing and stimulating break.

Address: Corte dei Cicala 1, Lecce.

Europe’s top design cities

by Paola Fiocchi Van den Brande January 11, 2023
written by Paola Fiocchi Van den Brande

No matter how many historic buildings and monuments it may have, no city is stuck in the past. Contemporary urban architecture, innovative experiments in sustainable living, the rejuvenation of derelict neighbourhoods, and a vibrant cultural landscape are examples of how a city lives and breathes in the here and now and looks towards the future.

We have selected a few of Europe’s most vibrant design cities known for their contemporary architecture, thriving design industry, and notable galleries of modern art and design. Each of these cities has been designated by UNESCO as a ‘City of Design’, a status given to cities which have been recognised as urban centres with an established design industry and a cultural landscape which is influenced by design.

Love design and contemporary architecture? Check out some of Europe’s top design cities.

Bilbao

Think of Bilbao and its iconic Guggenheim Museum immediately comes to mind. Opened in 1997, Frank Gehry’s structure is the city’s most popular tourist attraction and one of the best known examples of contemporary architecture in the world. But Bilbao is not only about the Guggenheim, there’s also the modern Zubizuri footbridge designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, the dramatic, award-winning design of the metro system by Norman Foster, and Phillippe Starck’s transformation of a former wine cellar into a cultural meeting place: the Alhóndiga Cultural and Leisure Centre.

Helsinki

Chosen as the World Design Capital in 2012, Helsinki is an important destination on Europe’s design map. At the heart of the city is the Design District, a collection of creative businesses spread across four neighbourhoods and 25 streets, made up of museums and art galleries, design and fashion boutiques, hotels and restaurants. This is also home to the Design Museum and Museum of Finnish Architecture, both of these are must-visits along with the Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art for the perfect introduction to Finland’s design and architecture. The annual Helsinki Design Week is the largest multidisciplinary festival of design in the Nordic countries and Finland’s premier design event of the year.

Torino

Torino is a centre for Italian technology and industry, and home to the FIAT automobile company. It was also the first city to hold the title of ‘World Design Capital’ in 2008.

This north Italian city is also known for its prestigious design schools like the Istituto d’Arte Applicata e Design (IAAD) and Istituto Europeo di Design, and avant-garde galleries of contemporary art, like the Museo d’Arte Contemporanea housed in the 10th century Castello di Rivoli, and the Galleria Civica di Arte Moderna e Contemporanea. The Quadrilatero Romano, the city’s oldest neighbourhood, has been transformed into a trendy design destination. Many independent design shops are found here, as well as trendy restaurants, bars and outdoor cafés.

Graz

It’s no surprise this Austrian city is one of the 17 international cities designated by UNESCO as a ‘City of Design’ because it has many stunning examples of contemporary architecture. The Kunsthaus was built in 2003 when the city was named European Capital of Culture. Called ‘the friendly alien’ because of its odd shape, it was designed by Colin Fournier and Peter Cook, and is now an important architectural landmark in the city showcasing contemporary art works of the last four decades. Another iconic landmark built in the same year, is the Murinsel (Mur island), a building in the form of a giant seashell which floats in the middle of the Mur river, designed by American artist Vito Acconci. Other remarkable contemporary buildings include the MUMUTH – Haus für Musik und Musiktheater (House for Music and Music Theatre) which opened in 2008, the astonishing structure housing the botanical gardens, and the black cantilevered office building called MP09 and dubbed ‘the black panther’.

Dundee

This Scottish city is the only city in the UK which has been designated as a ‘City of Design’ by UNESCO. The much-awaited new Victoria and Albert Museum of Design (V&A), with an ultra-modern look designed by famous Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, is scheduled to open in 2016. The new museum will be the focal point of an ambitious project underway to transform the city’s waterfront. Dundee’s other notable contemporary buildings include Maggie’s Cancer Care Centre designed by Frank Gehry, the Dundee Contemporary Arts centre designed by Richard Murphy, and Dundee House which houses the city council offices by Reiach and Hall Architects. Dundee also boasts three design schools: Duncan of Jordanstone, Abertay University and Dundee and Angus College which have produced many high-profile designers.

Berlin

This is a city which rose from the rubble of WWII to become one of the top cities in the world for contemporary architecture. Some of Berlin’s now iconic contemporary buildings include Le Corbusier’s Unite d’Habitation of Berlin built in 1957, the Berlin Philharmonic designed by Hans Scharoun and completed in 1963, and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe’s Neue National Gallery which opened its doors in 1968. Galleries like Künstlerhaus Bethanien and the KW Institute for Contemporary Art are popular venues showcasing the contemporary visual arts. The ÏMA Design Village opened in 2009 and quickly became an important landmark in Berlin’s design landscape. Located in a former industrial building in Kreuzberg, this is a collection of design studios, offices, and showrooms, as well as apartments mean for short- or long-term stays. Berlin also hosts one of the most important international design festivals: the 13th edition of the DMY International Design Festival Berlin is happening from 11 to 14 June 2015.

written by Elba Slamecka

As the Epiphany rounds off the festive season, Italians and tourists alike look to the country’s annual cultural highlights to take the edge off back-to-work. 2023 promises the return of some of Italy’s best-loved events, celebrating Italian culture, oenology, art and design. Here are seven of our favourites.

Venice Carnival

The legendary Venice Carnival returns to the city from February 4th to 21st 2023. This year’s carnival is entitled “Take your time for the Original Signs”, and takes its theme from the elements. It promises to be another spectacle of colour, lights and street performances, perfect for families and revellers of all tastes.

Venice Carnival

Back in time

Combining pagan rituals from Antiquity with centuries-old Venetian tradition, the carnival is a celebration of the city’s unique heritage. Venice’s iconic canals will be at the centre of the festivities, which will feature performances on and around the water.

Grab a mask

Don’t miss the “12 Marie” (12 Marys), twelve women dressed in historical costume who process down the Canal Grande aboard gondole towards Piazza San Marco. Other events include carnival floats parading across the city, and an exclusive themed dinner inside a gorgeous palazzo.

The full programme is available at the carnival’s official website, www.carnevale.venezia.it

Vinitaly

The 55th international wine and spirits exhibition will take place this year from 2nd to 5th April in Verona. Spread across ten hectares and welcoming over a hundred thousand visitors annually, Vinitaly is the world’s largest fair of its kind.

Vinitaly

Spoilt for choice

The exhibition is comprised of large pavilions, housing stalls where visitors can explore the thousands of products on offer. The space also features themed areas, with halls dedicated to organic products, international wine, wine-tasting and mixology, among others. Refuel

Don’t worry about wine-tasting on an empty stomach. The complex also includes top-notch dining options at the Food Park Area and Sol&Agrifood Hall.

Easy Access

The exhibition is held in Fiera di Verona in the South part of the city, reachable by car (exit Verona Sud) and public transport (by train to Verona Porta Nuova). The event is easy to navigate, complete with a map, app and parking and shuttle bus services.

Make the most of it

100˚ Arena di Verona Opera Festival

On selected dates from June to September, the Arena di Verona will celebrate its 100th season with fifty performances of works that defined the Arena’s history. Classical music fans from around the world are expected to line the seats of the 2000-year-old amphitheatre, one of Italy’s largest.

Arena di Verona

Vissi d’arte

Alongside new and old productions of classics by Verdi, Rossini, Puccini and Bizet, the music festival will include five exclusive performances by ballet and opera stars of today.

Put on your dancing shoes

On July 19th, Italian étoile Roberto Bolle will dance alongside distinguished colleagues from international ballet companies in “Roberto Bolle and Friends: la danza senza confine [dance without borders]”.

Three tenors and more

Music lovers cannot miss performances by three of opera’s biggest names: Plácido Domingo, Jonas Kauffman and Juan Diego Flórez. The choir and orchestra of Milan’s Teatro Alla Scala will also be gracing the stage, in their first ever performance at the Arena.

Milan Fashion Week

Milan is a non-negotiable part of any fashion lover’s itinerary. This year, Milan Fashion Week runs from 13th to 17th January for menswear, and 21st to 27th February for womenswear.

Milan Fashion Week

You may be a little late to the party, as tickets sell out fast and most of the shows are by invitation only. But not to worry! Many of the shows are streamed live, including on a big screen in the magical Piazza Duomo.

The city is your Front Row

The global fashion capital comes to life off the runway as well. Whether or not you attend the shows, events and after-parties, central Milan is the place to be when this year’s Fall/Winter collections land. The fashion world descends onto the city, complete with celebrities, outlandish clothing and plenty of backstage buzz.

Flying off the rack

During Fashion Week, Milan’s shopping district greets the influx of avid shoppers with open arms. Iconic Italian and international brands complement their new collections by pulling out all the stops at their flagship stores in the city.

Be sure to stop by the Quadrilatero della Moda, the fashion district in Milan’s historic centre. Enclosed within Via Monte Napoleone, Corso Venezia, Via Manzoni and Via della Spiga, the concentration of high fashion in the Quadrilatero matches that of the catwalk.

Salone del Mobile

The 61st edition of the Salone del Mobile lands in Fiera Milano (northwest of Milan) on 18th to 23rd April this year. A hub for furniture designers, distributors and buyers, Milan is packed during this period, so be sure to plan ahead.

Salone del Mobile Milano

Take a (designer) seat

The exhibition is the global destination for interior design, showcasing latest trends in furniture and home décor from the world’s top brands. Whether you’re looking for a sofa, decorative items or quirky fabrics, a tour through the pavilions will feel like walking through an issue of Elle Decor.

A World of Interiors

Themed exhibits include Workspace 3.0 and SaloneSatellite, dedicated to designs for educational and professional settings and emerging designers under 35. Also don’t miss Euroluce, which displays lighting fixture designs from over four hundred brands and is in its 24th season.

Check out Salone del Mobile’s website for details: www.salonemilano.it

Festival dei Due Mondi Spoleto

The Festival dei Due Mondi (“festival of two worlds”) at Spoleto is a celebration of the Arts. Coupling tradition and innovation in music, dance, visual art and theatre, this year’s festival will run from June 23rd to July 9th.

Artistic heritage

Ever since its foundation in 1958, the festival has played host to some of the biggest names in the arts. It aims to bring together the “two worlds” of American and European culture. Past attendees include Luciano Pavarotti, Roman Polanski, Nino Rota and Ezra Pound.

What’s On

Explore the range of concerts, plays, operas, dance and more, in both indoor and outdoor venues. This year’s programme has yet to be released. Nevertheless, last year’s figures – hundreds of performances by over six hundred artists – promise an unparalleled and diverse cultural experience.

Get involved

Several events allow audiences to participate in the festival, with interactive performances and yoga to get you moving. And don’t forget to take time for sightseeing! Spoleto is one of Umbria’s many jewels, and the festival’s landmark concert takes place in front of the medieval cathedral.

Keep an eye on the official website festivaldispoleto.com to purchase tickets.

Kefalonia

Corfu’s relatively less-known neighbour is increasingly the destination of choice for lovers of natural beauty, food and wine. Home to some of Greece’s finest beaches and dotted with quaint, colourful villages, Kefalonia has something for every kind of explorer.

Where to stay

Villa Orpheo in Poriata-Mousata, surrounded by an olive grove within a historic country estate, is where local tradition meets modern luxury. Step inside this fantastic five-bedroom villa and you will be transported into a nostalgic blend of old Greece and Tuscan tones. With two double and three twin bedrooms, Villa Orpheo is perfect for families and island breaks for up to ten guests.

This is the place for foodies – experience Kefalonia’s rich culinary scene in the nearby capital Agrostoli and around the island, or stay at home and let the villa’s wonderful chef create delicious meals chosen by you!

For maximum relaxation, you can make the most of the onsite massages and Tuscan-style swimming pool and lounge area. Once you feel restored, be sure to hire the villa’s own skippered yacht to sail through the Ionian or enjoy a meal on the water.

For the adventurer

Take a boat tour and see the sun stream through a hole in the rock onto the glittering waters and stalactites of the Melissani Cave, one of the island’s unmissable hidden gems.

If you’re an avid hiker, you’ll be spoilt for choice with the island’s mountain trails. Walk up Kefalonia’s tallest mountain Megas Soros through the surrounding natural park, and take in spellbinding views of the Ionian Sea once you’ve reached the top.

Sit back and enjoy the view

Nestled between two mountains is Myrtos beach, the island’s largest and one of the country’s most famous beaches.

Across the island, the gorgeous white-pebbled Antisamos beach boasts equally breathtaking views, surrounded by mountains covered in lush vegetation. You’ll be in good company – actors Penelope Cruz and Nicholas Cage filmed scenes from Captain Corelli’s Mandolin here.

For those looking to pair gorgeous views with comfort and amenities, head to the island’s luxurious Makris Gialos beach, which is well-equipped with sun loungers, bars, and sports facilities.

Take a sip, and a stroll

The island’s many villages are a great place to experience Kefalonia’s vibrant culture. Some of the  prettiest towns are Assos, Fiskardo, and Sami. For a deep-dive into ancient history, catch a regular boat from Sami to Ithaca, home to the classical hero Odysseus.

Be sure to try Kefalonia’s famous pies with all kinds of fillings, and to catch the sunset over a glass of homegrown wine – Robola, one of Greece’s best wines, is native to Kefalonia, as are local varieties of Moschato and Moavrodafni.

Mykonos – Villa Joy

White-washed interiors meet stone and earth tones in the delightful Villa Joy, a boutique-style haven with unparalleled views just 300m from the sea. Immersed in the silence and stillness of its surroundings, the villa offers complete seclusion for families and friends looking for a retreat from the noise of busy lives.

Out and about

If you can manage to part with the villa’s beautiful views and infinity pool, some of Mykonos’ best-loved beaches are a short drive away. The closest is Ftelia beach, and a fifteen-minute drive will take you to the Kalo Livadi and Elia beaches.

For those looking to explore the island, the town of Ano Mera is just 3km away from Villa Joy, offering cosy tavernas with fresh fish and local cuisine, and services such as supermarkets and a pharmacy.

Change of scene

Mykonos is also, of course, a famous destination of choice for celebrities and the global jet-set. Villa Joy is an easy commute from the island’s wealth of luxury experiences, and cosmopolitan centres with shopping, fine dining and buzzing nightlife.

Be sure to visit the town of Hora: stop by Little Venice, one of the island’s quirkiest and most snappable locations, and stick around into the night for great food and music. Return to Villa Joy to complete your VIP experience – the villa was used as a shooting location for a Louis Vuitton Cruise Collection campaign.

Santorini – Villa Erossea

Synonymous with romance, Santorini is the island of choice for destination weddings, honeymooners and couples. But with options ranging from panoramic walks to winery tours and water sports, the most famous of the Cyclades has something for everyone.

Where to stay

Tucked away and built in the island’s traditional “cave” style, Villa Erossea combines many of the features for which Santorini is best known – whitewashed minimalist architecture, luxury, and a prime location overlooking the endlessly-photographed Aegean Sea and Caldera.

With five bedrooms and room for up to eleven guests, the recently-renovated villa includes five-star amenities set on two levels, each with en-suite bedrooms and their own living area and kitchen space – ideal for groups of friends and couples’ retreats.

Wine and dine

It is no surprise that the island’s unique climate and rich volcanic soil has produced some of the world’s finest wine. Santorini’s vineyards are the oldest in the world, and are as enchanting aesthetically as they are fruitful. The island is full of wineries offering tours and wine-tasting sessions.

Explore

The white buildings with blue cupolas Santorini is known for are at your doorstep in Imerovigli, the famous Caldera town in which Villa Erossea sits. Simply walk through the town and take in the magnificent vistas, quaint little shops and restaurants, and enjoy a glorious sunset to crown your day.

Lace up your boots

Hikers of all abilities will enjoy a quick walk up the Skaros Rock in Imerovigli, formerly the site of a thirteenth-century fortress.

A half-hour’s scenic walk will take you from Imerovigli to Fira, Santorini’s main town and the place to go for the island’s well-known social and nightlife scene.

If you’re feeling ambitious, walk the complete 10km trail that will take you across the cliffs from Fira to Oia, stopping by Firostefani.

Italy’s Best Designer Outlets

This year’s Black Friday may have already come and gone, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t still great deals to be found. Italy is packed with designer outlets housing the world’s favourite fashion brands, often very close to the factories where the finest quality apparel continues to be produced. So whether you’re scratching your head for last-minute Christmas presents or looking to take a whistle-stop shopping trip, Italy’s selection of outlet stores will leave you spoilt for choice. Here are a few suggestions of Italy’s best designer outlets, from North to South.

FoxTown Factory Stores

The FoxTown Factory Stores are technically in Switzerland, but are such a favourite among Italian shoppers that they might as well be in Italy. Located in the Italian-speaking Canton of Ticino, the outlet, also known as FoxTown Mendrisio, is easily accessible from the Como and Milan areas, which are a short drive away along the main roads.

Housing 250 brands in a 4-storey, 3km complex, FoxTown offers an impressive selection of sportswear, luxury fashion, makeup, accessories and homeware – from Coach to Le Creuset, Gucci to Prada, and a great deal in between. Open 360 days a year from 11:00 to 19:00, why not make a day of it and go for lunch at one of their nine bars and restaurants and then spend the afternoon shopping? And you can take the whole family – there’s a children’s play area on the first floor.

Address: Via Angelo Maspoli 18, 6850 Mendrisio, Switzerland

Nearest airports: Lugano (LUG), Milan Malpensa (MXP)

Designer Outlet Serravalle

Accessible by car, public transport and daily shuttle buses from Milan exclusively for customers, the outlet at Serravalle boasts over 200 stores with global luxury brands discounted up to 70%. The outlet is open every day from 10:00 to 20:00 (with modified hours around Christmas and New Years’), and you can stay from breakfast to dinner-time with its selection of 15 cafés and restaurants, ranging from Italian and Asian to fast food and gelato.

Serravalle is particularly magical at this time of year, when festive illuminations and Christmas trees abound. A pop-up Christmas store sells customizable holiday-themed presents, and you can even venture into “Santa’s Kitchen” for an immersive experience complete with sweet treats, real life elves and Santa Claus himself.

Situated close to the rolling hills and ancient castles of the Piemontese countryside, when you’re done shopping you can explore the hidden gem of the surrounding Monferrato – a UNESCO World Heritage Site – and maybe try a glass of the local wine for which the area’s vineyards are famous.

Address: Via della Moda, 1, 15069 Serravalle Scrivia AL (Piemonte)

Within easy reach of Venice, it is the perfect destination for those looking to include outlet shopping as part of a visit to the iconic city. While you can’t quite drift in on a gondola, the outlet is located just 20 minutes from Venice’s Marco Polo airport, runs a shuttle bus from various locations around Venice, and can also arrange private or group transfers.

The Designer Outlet Noventa di Piave ranked #1 in this year’s classification for “Italy’s Best Customer Service”, and with comprehensive guest services including an information point, tax refund office and a lounge, your shopping experience will be as smooth and stress-free as it is enjoyable.

Fidenza Village

The Fidenza Village outlet complex offers great deals on international labels in a colourful setting that recalls the vibrant architecture and history of its native region. Accessible from the highway, Fidenza is a great pit-stop on the way to or from Tuscany, or as part of a trip through the beautiful surrounding region of Emilia Romagna. By car and train, Fidenza is a comfortable distance from Milan, Bologna and Reggio Emilia, and shuttle buses are also available also from Milan and Piacenza.

Fidenza’s easily-navigated layout makes for a varied shopping experience without being overwhelming, and you can refuel at any of the outlet’s nine dining options between sushi, plant-based burgers and artisanal gelato. For an authentic taste of Emilia Romagna’s rich regional cuisine, you must try Trattoria dai Sibani, an unassuming family-run restaurant serving generous dishes created with seasonal and locally-sourced produce, located along the main road and a mere five-minute drive from Fidenza Village.

Festive Fun all’Italiana – Six of Italy’s Best Christmas Markets

by Elba Slamecka November 27, 2022
written by Elba Slamecka

As an unusually warm autumn gives way to the first chills of winter, Italy’s Alpine regions, as well as their Southern counterparts, are gearing up for another year of traditional Christmas markets to brighten up their cities as the days get shorter. And if you think Italy has more to do with pasta than with pretzels, you’re in for a surprise – these markets frequently combine the country’s Mediterranean heritage with the Northern regions’ profound historical links with their Germanic neighbours. The result is a colourful display of Christmas decorations, seasonal food and wine, and the best of what local craftsmanship has to offer. Here are six of our favourites.

Vipiteno (Alto Adige/Süd Tirol)

Walk through the Piazza Città (Stadtplatz) at Vipiteno between November 25th and January 6th, and the first thing you’ll notice is the town’s iconic Zwölferturm tower, which dates back to the fifteenth century, lit up à la Harrods. While the more inquisitive can venture inside the tower to see its impressive collection of Nativity cribs, the square itself houses rows of cosy wooden huts selling anything from winter clothing to local gastronomy and traditional handicrafts.

Around these, the pedestrian area boasts a variety of shops, housed in largely unchanged buildings whose colourful exteriors and quaint oriel windows nostalgically recall the city’s past. Vipiteno is Süd Tirol’s northernmost city, and its over 800-year history as a regional mining and trading centre permeates the city and surrounding areas even today – history enthusiasts will love exploring the Ridnaun-Schneeberg Mining World through its special guided tours.

Finally, for those going to and from the slopes, the town centre is a mere five minutes from the Rosskopf valley station, the local gateway to extensive pistes and Italy’s longest artificial sledging trail – especially thrilling at night, when the track is lit by floodlights.

Verona (Veneto)

Shakespeare’s star-cross’d lovers are not the only foreign import to have left a mark on Verona’s identity. The city has its own holiday traditions – like the iconic Pandoro, which originates in Verona and alongside Panettone is the Italian Christmas dessert par excellence – but from 25th November to 24th December the Nuremberg Christmas Market will descend on the city’s Piazza dei Signori, offering locals and tourists traditional German food, festive decorations and handicrafts. Located in the city centre just two minutes away from the Casa di Giulietta (House of Juliet), one wonders whether Verona’s famous feuding households might have reconciled less dramatically over bratwurst, Stollen, and a glass of mulled wine – or vin brulé, as Italians call it.

Aosta (Val d’Aosta)

Visitors to Aosta’s Marché Vert Noël will find themselves transplanted into an idyllic alpine village complete with trails of roads, bridges, charming chalets, festive music and lighting, and even a forest of real fir trees. But this “village”, and the famous Christmas Market it houses, happens to be in the middle of a buzzing city! That’s right – each year the city of Aosta changes into a festive haven in which curious passers-by can hunt for anything from locally-made clothing in leather, hemp, felt and wool, to artisanal wooden sculptures and ceramics. To experience the magic, head to Aosta from November 19th to January 8th (N.B. opens later on Christmas and New Years’ Day).

aosta christmas market
The traditional Christmas village of Aosta is held every year next to the archeological complex of the city, with the impressive old ruin of the Roma Theatre. Alleys, squares, little bridges and stalls with crafts and sweets welcome visitors. Aosta is the principal city in the alpine region of Valle d’Aosta, in northern Italy.

Castiglione del Lago and Orvieto (Umbria)

Every year Castiglione del Lago metamorphoses into “Luci sul Trasimeno”, a month-long winter wonderland hosting holiday-themed attractions and entertainment for the whole family, complete with the world’s largest Christmas-tree-on-water shimmering on the surface of the Lago Trasimeno, from which the pleasure grounds take their name. Be sure to visit if you’re in the area – #Lucisultrasimeno is open for one month from 8th December.

And while you’re in Umbria, the “Umbria Jazz” Winter programme offers concerts and other events for fans of jazz, gospel, classical music and others, to liven the days between Christmas and New Year’s Day (December 28th to January 1st). The concerts are held in the historic town of Orvieto, home to the unmissable Duomo di Orvieto, one of the world’s most beautiful cathedrals, which dates back to the year 1290 and is a superlative example of the Gothic and Romanesque styles of architecture.

Milano (Lombardia)

Italy’s financial hub and global fashion capital is home to several Christmas markets, the largest of which takes place in Piazza Duomo, overlooked by the imposing fourteenth-century Gothic cathedral. This market houses over 60 chalets, selling a range of typical Christmas arts and crafts, gifts, and the chance to sample Milanese and Lombard delicacies – the best winter sustenance! The market in Piazza Duomo is open between November 25th and January 6th (the Feast of the Epiphany, affectionately referred to as La Befana, after the good old witch who traditionally brings children presents on this day). If you’re in town on December 6th, be sure to head to the Piazza to see the spectacular lighting of the Christmas tree.

Also in Milan is the Il Villaggio delle Meraviglie (literally “The Village of Wonders”), a pop-up festive fair in the Giardini Indro Montanelli open from November 19th to January 8th. The centrally-located gardens, accessible from Corso Venezia, host a Christmas market, skating rink, festive entertainment and include the chance for children to meet Babbo Natale (the Italian Santa Claus).

For those interested in discovering Milan’s rich cultural and religious heritage, a tour inside the Duomo merits to be followed by a trip to the Oh Bej Oh Bej fair, now located around the Castello Sforzesco in the city centre. Held between the Feast of S. Ambrogio (St. Ambrose) and the following Sunday (this year that’s 7th-11th December), the fair commemorates the fourth-century Bishop of Milan who became the city’s patron saint. On offer at Oh Bej Oh Bej are a range of toys, accessories, antiques, bric-a-brac and local food.

Napoli (Campania)

Naples’ striking National Railway Museum of Pietrarsa is the perfect venue for an immersive festive experience, and this year it will host the fourth edition of the Città del Natale (“City of Christmas”). Spanning an area of 36,000 square meters on the water’s edge, the museum’s grounds boast breath-taking views of the Gulf of Naples from its nineteenth-century railway pavilions, which contain an impressive collection of railway parts, locomotives and passenger carriages from times gone by. In the holiday season, the Città del Natale adds to the display with its market stalls, food and entertainment. Visit between December 3rd and January 8th to take in the magical atmosphere of a traditional Neapolitan Christmas – complete with street performers, light displays and the best food and wine from the surrounding region of Campania.

Absolutely don’t miss the world-famous exhibition of Nativity Cribs in Via S. Gregorio Armeno, wedged narrowly at the heart of the city’s Centro Storico (Historic Centre) and known for the hand-crafted figurines populating Nativity scenes of all shapes and sizes.
