While the lake itself offers plenty of attractions, venturing out on day trips can enhance your Lake Como experience. Here are four enchanting day trips, each showcasing a different facet of this exquisite region. 1. Bellagio: The Pearl of Lake Como No visit to Lake Como is complete without exploring Bellagio, often referred to as the “Pearl of the Lake.” Situated at the intersection of the lake’s three branches, Bellagio offers panoramic views, elegant villas, and lush gardens. Begin your day with a leisurely stroll along Bellagio’s picturesque promenade, lined with charming cafes and boutiques. Visit the iconic Villa Melzi, where you can wander through beautifully landscaped gardens adorned with statues, exotic plants, and a Japanese pond. The villa’s museum offers insights into its rich history and art collection. For lunch, indulge in traditional Italian cuisine at one of the lakeside restaurants. Savor fresh seafood, homemade pasta, and local wine while enjoying the serene lake views. In the afternoon, take a boat ride to explore nearby attractions. The Villa Carlotta in Tremezzo, known for its art and botanic gardens, is a short ferry ride away. Alternatively, venture to the quaint fishing village of Varenna, where you can explore the Castello di Vezio and its falconry displays. 2. Como: A Blend of History and Modernity The city of Como, located at the southern tip of the lake, seamlessly blends historical charm with modern amenities. A day trip to Como offers a rich tapestry of cultural, architectural, and culinary experiences. Start your exploration with a visit to the Como Cathedral (Duomo di Como), a stunning example of Gothic and Renaissance architecture. Nearby, the Broletto, the medieval town hall, and the Basilica of San Fedele are also worth visiting. Take a leisurely walk along the lakefront promenade to Villa Olmo, a neoclassical masterpiece surrounded by beautiful gardens. The villa frequently hosts art exhibitions and cultural events. For lunch, head to the historic center, where you’ll find an array of trattorias offering traditional dishes like risotto al pesce persico (perch risotto) and polenta. Afterward, indulge in some shopping at Como’s stylish boutiques or the renowned silk shops. In the afternoon, take the funicular railway to Brunate, a hilltop village offering breathtaking views of Lake Como and the Alps. Enjoy a hike through scenic trails or relax with a drink at a café while soaking in the panoramic vistas. 3. Morcote: A Swiss Gem on Lake Lugano For a touch of Swiss charm, head to Morcote, a picturesque village on the shores of Lake Lugano, just a short drive from Lake Como. Known for its idyllic setting and charming architecture, Morcote offers a tranquil escape with a unique cultural flavor. Start your day with a visit to the Church of Santa Maria del Sasso, perched on a hillside overlooking the lake. The church, with its beautiful frescoes and serene atmosphere, is a highlight of Morcote. Stroll through the village’s narrow streets, lined with historic houses and inviting cafes. For lunch, dine at one of the lakeside restaurants, savoring Swiss-Italian fusion cuisine. Enjoy dishes like risotto with saffron and local fish, paired with Swiss wines. In the afternoon, explore Parco Scherrer, a stunning garden filled with exotic plants, sculptures, and pavilions. The park offers a peaceful retreat with breathtaking views of Lake Lugano and the surrounding mountains. Before returning to Lake Como, take a leisurely boat ride on Lake Lugano, soaking in the serene beauty of the region and the charming lakeside villages. 4. Bergamo: A Hidden Gem of Medieval and Renaissance Charm A visit to Bergamo offers a delightful surprise. Divided into the historic Upper Town (Città Alta) and the modern Lower Town (Città Bassa), Bergamo is rich in medieval and Renaissance architecture. Start your day in the Città Alta, accessed via a funicular that offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape. Wander through the narrow, cobblestone streets and visit the Piazza Vecchia, the heart of the Upper Town. Here, you’ll find the Palazzo della Ragione, the ancient town hall, and the beautiful Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore, adorned with intricate frescoes and tapestries. For lunch, dine at one of the many charming trattorias in the Città Alta, where you can enjoy local specialties like casoncelli (stuffed pasta) and polenta e osei (polenta with small birds). In the afternoon, explore the Venetian walls that encircle the Upper Town, offering panoramic views of the Lombardy plains. DestinationsOur Partners Planning On Renovating Your Holiday Home? by Paola Fiocchi Van den Brande November 13, 2023 written by Paola Fiocchi Van den Brande Embarking on a journey to transform your family holiday home into a heavenly retreat is an exciting venture, and choosing the right interior designer is paramount to its success. In the realm of home aesthetics, the expertise and vision of a skilled designer can make all the difference. To ensure a harmonious collaboration and bring your design dreams to life, it’s crucial to pose the right questions before making a commitment. In this blog post we have the pleasure of interviewing Christen Chen, Owner at Sonntagmorgen Design. Together we explore the top 10 questions you should ask an interior designer before entrusting them with the task of crafting your dream home. From understanding their design philosophy to clarifying logistical details and budget considerations, these inquiries will empower you to forge a successful collaboration and achieve the holiday home you’ve always envisioned. Whether you are planning on renovating your entire home or just a room or two, whether it’s giving it a complete overhaul or just a refresh, join us as we unravel the key inquiries that will guide you through the process of selecting the perfect interior designer for your unique style and needs. The dream home you’ve always envisioned The Top Ten Questions To Ask An Interior Designer Before Committing What type of spaces do you design? Most designers focus on either commercial or residential projects. Commercial projects vary in complexities with experts covering different industries. Residential projects can be challenging depending on size and technicalities. If you want to build a swimming pool or a home theatre, for example, do make sure you find a designer who understands the challenges of these installations. What type of services do you offer? In general, design services can be broken down into space planning, furniture and fixture selection, renovation and installation. Some designers only provide the design while you do your own purchasing, some provide full service where everything, including art pieces, are sourced for you. Some designers are willing to accept projects as small as one room, while others only take large projects. What is the design process? You do not want to attend a design meeting, then to walk away not knowing next steps or when you will hear from the designer again. Ask about design turnaround time, furniture lead time, how/where he or she sources their products, and how the design will be presented. How much can I be involved in the design? Know if you are a hands on or a hands off client. Then ask how the designer typically interacts with his or her clients during the design phase. Find a designer who can take charge if you only want to say yes or no. Work with a collaborative and communicative designer if you are one who is very invested in the process. What is your design philosophy? This might seem like a fluffy question but it is actually quite important. Some designers could focus more on aesthetics, and some more on functionality and efficiency. Some believe in bold, personality-stating design while some take a more minimalistic approach. Designers can be very versatile, but not all designers are comfortable creating spaces that are polar opposite of their design belief. What if I change my mind or don’t like the design? How many changes can you make? It is human nature to change our minds. Some design firms have a very rigid number of design changes they will make. Have a thorough conversation with the designer on the style and direction before design work begins to reduce the need for major revisions. Read the contract carefully when you receive it. The number of revisions and extra payment should be clearly stated in the contract. How do you charge? There are multiple ways a designer can charge for services – by square meter, by hours or a retainer. There are designers who charge a standalone design fee, and some bundle the fees with renovation and furnishing. Payment plans also differ from designer to designer. Make sure you ask upfront. What is your turnaround time? There will always be a time lag from concept to design, from revision to revision. Ask the designer what the turnaround time is so you don’t end up waiting endlessly. How long will the whole interior design project take? This varies on the size of your project, lead time of furniture chosen, the availability of tradesmen, and if any design and renovation work coincides with holidays. Things are typically much slower in the summer months and December. What contractors do you work with? If you are looking for a designer who also handles the renovation and installation, it is important to know that the crew he or she works with is experienced and the designer will ensure quality outcomes. Last Note Putting your dream holiday home together can be a long, arduous journey. Find a designer who is responsive, communicative and who you are comfortable with will make the process much more pleasant. Christen Chen is a Munich based Interior Designer. Her studio, Sonntagmorgen Design, serves clients across Germany. She also consults and provides design services within the European market. Destination: ItalyDestinationsTrip Ideas Italy Made Famous By Films by Paola Fiocchi Van den Brande October 26, 2023 written by Paola Fiocchi Van den Brande Italy’s stunning landscapes, charming cities, and rich history have made it a popular choice for filmmakers. The ‘dolce vita’ has captivated the imagination of international directors since the 1940’s and viewers have dreamt through the actors’ eyes a sweet, slow life riding by Vespa along narrow cobbled streets dressed in fashionable clothes. The list of globally acclaimed films set in Italy is long, and hard to summarize in one post. We hope to have made a thoughtful selection of the top destinations you must visit if you are either a film or Italy lover, or both: Rome, Lazio:Rome, the Eternal City, has played a pivotal role in numerous iconic films. Its historic architecture, grandeur, and timeless beauty have made it a dream destination for filmmakers. “Roman Holiday” is perhaps the most famous film shot in Rome, featuring Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck in a romantic comedy that takes viewers on a delightful journey through the city’s iconic sites. From the enchanting Trevi Fountain to the ancient Roman Forum, and the legendary Bocca della Verità, the film captures the essence of Rome’s allure. Meanwhile, “Angels & Demons” adapted from Dan Brown’s bestselling novel, is another notable film set in Rome. It takes audiences on a thrilling quest through Vatican City, where the historic St. Peter’s Basilica and other famous landmarks serve as intriguing backdrops. Who can forget “Eat, Pray, Love” the 2010 American biographical romantic drama film starring Julia Roberts as Elizabeth Gilbert, based on Gilbert’s 2006 memoir of the same name, took us on a culinary journey through Rome’s gelaterie and pizzerie. Rome’s cinematic appeal extends beyond its history, making it a must-visit destination for film and travel enthusiasts alike. Venice, Veneto:Venice’s unique beauty and enchanting canals have made it a prime location for filmmakers to weave their cinematic magic. “The Italian Job” features a memorable boat chase scene through Venice’s waterways, showcasing the city’s distinctive architecture and picturesque canals. In “The Tourist,” the grandeur of Venice’s palaces and the romantic allure of gondola rides create a backdrop for a captivating tale of intrigue and romance. Additionally, the James Bond classic “Moonraker” includes a thrilling gondola chase in the Venetian canals, offering a suspenseful and unforgettable sequence. Venice’s timeless charm, with its winding streets and water-based transportation, ensures it remains a favorite destination for filmmakers looking to add an air of mystery and romance to their stories. Tuscany:Tuscany’s rolling hills and cypress lined lanes, charming villages, and vineyard-covered landscapes have made it a popular setting for films. “Under the Tuscan Sun” tells a heartwarming story set in the beautiful town of Cortona, where the protagonist embarks on a journey of self-discovery amid Tuscany’s picturesque countryside. “A Room with a View” beautifully captures Florence’s artistic and architectural splendor, with scenes set in the city’s iconic locations like the Piazza della Signoria and the Florence Cathedral. “The English Patient” transports viewers to the rustic and romantic Tuscany of World War II, where the countryside serves as a stunning backdrop to a story of love and tragedy. Tuscany’s cinematic appeal lies not only in its scenic beauty but also in the genuine and warm atmosphere of its towns and the timeless allure of its cultural heritage. Cinque Terre, Liguria:The enchanting Cinque Terre, with its colorful villages perched on cliffs overlooking the Ligurian Sea, has provided a picturesque setting for several films. “The Trip to Italy” offers comedic adventures across the region, showcasing the stunning landscapes, charming towns, and the unique character of each of the five villages. The film captures the essence of travel and the beauty of Cinque Terre’s coastal scenery, making it an inspiring destination for tourists. On the other hand, “The Perfect Husband” takes a darker turn, portraying a suspenseful thriller set against the backdrop of these charming coastal towns. The juxtaposition of the idyllic setting and the suspenseful plot creates a unique atmosphere, making Cinque Terre a captivating film location for different genres. Sicily:Sicily’s diverse landscapes, rich history, and unique culture have made it a fascinating destination for filmmakers. “The Godfather” trilogy, one of the most iconic film series in cinema history, features scenes shot in the small town of Savoca and the nearby town of Forza d’Agro. These locations served as iconic settings for the Corleone family saga and have become must-visit spots for fans of the films. Meanwhile, “Cinema Paradiso,” a heartwarming Italian film, celebrates the magic of cinema and the nostalgic charm of a Sicilian village. The film beautifully captures the essence of Sicilian life and the profound influence of movies on the community, making it a touching portrayal of the island’s cultural and cinematic legacy. Most recent masterpieces filmed in Sicily include the “Inspector Montalbano” series taking us to Ragusa, Noto and Modica and the internationally acclaimed “The White Lotus”, filmed in Cefalù and Taormina. Sicily’s cinematic history and its natural beauty continue to draw visitors who are eager to explore the settings of these famous films and immerse themselves in the island’s rich cultural tapestry. Matera: Matera, a city located in the Basilicata region of southern Italy, is renowned for its unique and ancient stone-carved architecture. The city’s historical center, known as the “Sassi di Matera,” is a UNESCO World Heritage site and is often referred to as the “City of Stones.” Matera’s extraordinary charm lies in its troglodyte dwellings, cave churches, and winding alleyways that date back to prehistoric times. These structures, carved into the rock and featuring a hauntingly beautiful, almost surreal aesthetic, have attracted filmmakers and visitors alike. In recent years, Matera gained international attention as a prominent film location, particularly serving as the backdrop for movies like “The Passion of the Christ” and the James Bond film “No Time to Die” (although the famous bridge from which James Bond performs its jump is the Acquedotto in Gravina in Puglia (near Bari, Region of Puglia). Matera’s captivating blend of history, architecture, and dramatic landscapes has made it a must-visit destination for those seeking a glimpse into Italy’s ancient past and cinematic allure Have we inspired you to visit Italy?Explore our curated portfolio of spacious luxury villa rentals in Italy, selected for their ease of accommodating extended families, weddings, corporate retreats and other private events. Destination: ItalyDestinationsHoneymoon destinationsIdeal for CouplesVenues for special eventsWedding Venues Ingredients for the perfect wedding in Italy by Paola Fiocchi Van den Brande October 25, 2023 written by Paola Fiocchi Van den Brande Interview with Sandra Di Marcantonio, wedding expert. Getting married in Italy is an enchanting dream for many couples, captivated by the sweet taste of a Mediterranean lifestyle, delicious food, balmy weather and the prospect of dining under olive trees and starry skies. A destination wedding in Italy is the perfect opportunity to create the most memorable experience for both you and those partaking in your celebrations. Villa Altaserra Wine Resort Tuscany Passepartout Homes had the pleasure to interview Sandra Di Marcantonio, our talented in-house wedding expert, on the secrets to the perfect wedding in Italy. What are the 3 most important ingredients for a successful wedding in Italy? 1) Finding and establishing a relationship with the right vendors. 2) Acknowledging that Italians are not bilingual, above all they are not proficient in English. Therefore you’ll need a helping hand from somebody who’s fluent in Italian and who understands the Italian society and culture as well. 3) Accept that things can take time in Italy. La dolce vita, you know… ?! Why should couples consider a wedding abroad, specifically in Italy? If there is one thing that the worldwide pandemic has taught us, it’s how special our family and friends are. A destination wedding in Italy is a great way to make up for lost time and spoil them. Besides, would it be an understatement to say that Italy is one of the most beautiful places on Earth? Think about how beautiful your wedding pictures will look thanks to those those scenic landscapes, picturesque city centres and stunning nature. Photo Courtesy Le Spose di Gio’ Should couples consider hiring a wedding planner with experience on weddings in Italy? I think it can certainly help you save lots of time and money to book a wedding planner or a coordinator for the day. On your wedding day you should be living your dream with your spouse and concentrate on creating memories with your friends and family. You should not be bothered with questions about the Prosecco, the occupied parking space of the live band, or the missing shoes of your maid of honour. What are the main considerations to make when getting married in Italy? 1) Time is relative. 🙂 Be classy, absolutely not sassy! Food is a religion! 2) Traditional italian confetti are a must have as a wedding favor for your guests. They are authentic, delicious and a total surprise for your guests. 3) Don’t aim for a wedding in the weekend, but prefer a week day when everything is more relaxed. 4) Find someone to rely on that is fluent in Italian and can help you tackle last minute problems. 5) Step away from traditional wedding locations such as Tuscany and discover hidden gems in Umbria or Puglia. 6) Flowers and floral decor can be more expensive in Italy. Focus more on lightning: very trending and money saving at the same time. 7) Aperitivo time: include a cocktail hour without canapés, but with several food stands and utterly delicious food. Forget about mac n’ cheese, pepperoni pizza and chicken parmegian. Those recipes don’t even exist in Italy! God forbid! Go for authenic, simple but tasty, Italian style aperitivi stands. I’ll promise you’ll love it. Photo courtesy Le Spose di Gio’ Why choose a private holiday villa for your destination wedding? Well, first of all the private holiday villa’s are a dream. But there are three more significant reasons that explain why a private villa is your go to wedding venue. We expect the shift in the wedding industry to continue. The trend to more intimate affairs will stay relevant and more and more couples will opt for renting a private villa, castle, masseria or a vineyard mansion and host the wedding with an external catering company. What can be defined as the ‘Pintimate Wedding’- a personalised and intimate micro wedding – has surged out of the many Covid restrictions that were placed on couples around the world back in 2020/21. Many couples opted for a much more relaxed affair with a guest list of 30 or under, with a fusion of formal and informal and much bigger per head budget than you get with a larger guest list. Less is more once again. The focus will be more on the guest experience than anything else. Real thought is being put into that journey the guest goes as a part of the wedding. Gastronomy, beautiful table decor and lightning, welcome goodie bags, wedding favors, the wedding venue and the complete personalisation of the wedcation will be the new standard. Lastly, backyard weddings are here to stay, but not all backyards are created with equal opportunity to separate the ceremony, cocktail hour and dinner. Renting a spacious private villa is an excellent solution for a all-in-one wedding event space using all features of the estate to maximize the experience of the couple and their party. This is a difficult question, because according to me it depends on the theme and location of the wedding. Italy is such a various country when it comes to landscapes, architecture and general vibe. It is very difficult to define one wedding season for a country like Italy. I mean, imagine a wedding at the beautiful Como lake in spring. Or a summer wedding in June at the Amalfi coast? Fall would be the perfect time of the year for a rustic-glam wedding in Puglia, because the temperatures are no longer skyrocketing. Speaking of autumn, can you imagine the beautiful autumn color palette in Umbria that serves as a natural decor for you garden wedding? How can I forget about the mountains? The cosy feeling of a Holiday- Christmas wedding in the snow… I think Italy is the perfect wedding location 11 months of the year, but I would advise to skip August when the entire country takes off and is in holiday mood. Photo courtesy Le Spose di Gio’ Dress! Should I buy in Italy or at home? Definitely at home! Some of the best designers in bridal wear are from Italian origin and I perfectly understand why a bride would want to fly to Italy and go shopping for her Italian wedding dress. Given the current circumstances, I would advise to research for the right retailer in your surroundings and screen their collections. All the Italian collections are worldwide available. I believe that’s the savest option for the moment. Trust me you don’t want your dress stucked in Italy, while you cannot travel and go try it on for the alterations. If I were a bride to be, I would play it safe. Lastly, many bridal brands are hosting online consultations. So, if your dream wedding dress is not available in the bridal boutique near you, you can always get in touch with the brand and shop your dress online. Planning a wedding in Italy? Why Island-hopping Is The Best Way. by Paola Fiocchi Van den Brande August 28, 2023 written by Paola Fiocchi Van den Brande When we think of island hopping, idyllic Greek or tropical Caribbean islands first spring to mind, right? Have you ever considered island hopping in Sicily? It can be an incredible and memorable experience. Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea and is surrounded by several smaller islands, each with its own unique charm and attractions. The Sicilian archipelago includes several notable islands, the most famous of which are the Aeolian Islands (Isole Eolie), a group of seven main islands and several smaller islets. In addition to the Aeolian Islands, there are other smaller islands and islets near Sicily that you might consider visiting as well, such as Ustica and Pantelleria. Vulcano. Here are some of the popular island in Sicily you might consider including in your island-hopping itinerary: Lipari: This is the largest of the Aeolian Islands and offers a mix of stunning landscapes, historical sites, and beautiful beaches. You can visit the Archaeological Museum, explore the town’s charming streets, and relax on its beaches. Vulcano: Known for its mud baths and hot springs, Vulcano offers a unique experience for visitors. You can hike up to the crater and enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding islands. Salina: This island is famous for its lush vegetation, picturesque villages, and excellent wines. It’s a great place for hiking and enjoying the natural beauty of the Aeolian archipelago. Panarea: A chic and fashionable island, Panarea is known for its nightlife, luxury resorts, and crystal-clear waters. It’s a great destination for those seeking a lively atmosphere. Stromboli: Home to one of Europe’s most active volcanoes, Stromboli offers the opportunity to witness volcanic activity and even hike to the summit to see the eruptions at night. Pantelleria: Though located a bit further from the Sicilian coast, Pantelleria is worth a visit for its unique landscapes, thermal waters, and traditional stone dwellings. Ustica: Often referred to as the “Black Pearl of the Mediterranean,” Ustica is a haven for divers and snorkelers due to its clear waters and underwater biodiversity. Lipari. Then probably Lipari would be your best choice. 7 Reasons to visit Lipari Diverse Attractions: Lipari has a mix of attractions that can appeal to both adults and children. Families can explore the historic town, visit the Archaeological Museum, and learn about the island’s volcanic history. Beaches: Lipari offers several beautiful beaches with clear waters, making it an ideal destination for swimming, playing in the sand, and enjoying water activities with children. Boat Tours: The Aeolian Islands are known for their boat tours, and Lipari serves as a central hub for exploring the other islands in the archipelago. Taking short boat trips to neighboring islands like Vulcano or Salina can be exciting for kids. Accessibility: Lipari is relatively easy to reach from the mainland, making it convenient for families traveling with children. You can take a ferry or hydrofoil from various ports in Sicily. Natural Beauty: Lipari’s landscapes are diverse and captivating, providing opportunities for family hikes and outdoor exploration. The island’s volcanic features and lush vegetation can spark children’s curiosity. Relaxed Atmosphere: Lipari has a laid-back atmosphere that is suitable for families seeking a peaceful and enjoyable vacation. The island offers a break from the hustle and bustle of larger cities. Cultural Experiences: While enjoying the natural beauty, families can also learn about local culture, traditions, and cuisine through interactions with the friendly residents. When planning your island-hopping adventure in Sicily, make sure to consider ferry schedules and availability unless you are renting your own private yacht or catamaran. Depending on the time you have and your preferences, you can create an itinerary that allows you to explore the beauty, culture, and history of these diverse Mediterranean islands. Stromboli. Photo by Gianluca Baio for Unsplash. Best time to visit the Sicilian Islands? If you are chartering your own private boat, then May to September would be the best months to visit the Sicilian Islands. If you are planning to visit the islands by ferry and staying in hotels/B&Bs/villa rentals, then avoid the month of August if you can due to its hot temperatures and huge crowds. How to reach the Sicilian Islands? Reaching the islands of the Sicilian archipelago is an enriching journey on itself. As there are no airports on any of the islands a part from Pantelleria and Lampedusa, the quickest way is to fly to Sicily first. Choose Catania or Palermo for the Eolian Islands. From there, you need to reach the ports of Milazzo, Messina or Palermo from which you can take ferries or hydrofoils. Timetables vary according to the season so please check carefully to ensure there transport is available in mid or low seasons. Choose Palermo for the Egadi islands. From there, travel to Marsala to catch ferries or hydrofoils. Choose Palermo, Trapani and Catania to fly to Pantelleria. During peak seasons there are also flights from major Italian airports. Choose Palermo and Catania to fly to Lampedusa Or fly to Lampedusa from Milan, Rome and Naples. Helpful Summary Eolian Islands Archipelago: Lipari, Vulcano, Salina, Filicudi, Alicudi Panarea, and a few smaller inhabited islands such as Basiluzzo, Lisca Bianca and Strombolicchio. Egadi Islands Archipelago: Favignana, Levanzo, Marettimo, Formica and the smaller islands of Maraone and Preveto. Pelagie Islands Archipelago: Lampedusa, Isola dei Conigli, Lampione and Linosa. Less known by tourists are the Stagnone Islands Archipelago and Ciclopi Islands Archipelago. The unique island of Pantelleria and the island of Ustica (sadly known for a deadly plane crash in 1980) do not belong to any archipelago. Google Maps.
