DestinationsExperiencesVenues for special eventsWellness RetreatsYoga Six Superb Villas for Sunrise Yoga by Paola Fiocchi Van den Brande July 29, 2017 written by Paola Fiocchi Van den Brande With bikini season well underway in Europe, yoga is a fast and fun way to get a beach ready body. There is also no better way to greet the day on holiday. Six stunning villas that offer the opportunity of yoga onsite are at their very best in the summer months. The backdrops vary from cityscapes to secluded beaches. What unites them is being utterly unforgettable. A Portuguese townhouse might not be the most obvious choice of yoga retreat, but Casa Fuzetta in the bustling Algarve port of Olhão is full of surprises. A funky and flexible twelve bedroom manor house, it is steeped in history but boasts all modcons. Its crowning glory is the panoramic roof terrace with yoga decks. Guests can practice their downward-facing dog with the sounds of seagulls and the lively city awakening all around them. There’s room for up to 16 practitioners to join an instructor on the deck. Casa Fuzetta – Algarve Another wonderful mansion in a very different setting can be found on the pretty Spanish island of Menorca. The Prestige villa offers many spaces for dawn yoga indoors and out across its lush 250 acres, and can easily arrange instructors for visitors. The unbelievable sense of natural seclusion it creates is perfect for a serene lotus pose. It boasts a high spec gym and massage rooms for taking the work out or the relaxation a stage further, as well as a spectacular outdoor heated pool. How many lucky travellers get to take a yoga class in their own medieval Italian castle? That is exactly what Castello Bonaparte in Perugia can offer. A simply wonderful and incredibly luxurious retreat, it is the perfect party palace, with the opportunity to rent the tower as well as the main residence to greatly increase the already generous accommodation. The entire second floor is a lovely covered terrace that is ideal for yoga instruction. Outside, the rose and jasmine-lined ancient courtyard offers an environment of perfect harmony with the tree pose. Castello Bonaparte – Umbria Many people have discovered yoga in the Greek islands, where the peaceful natural beauty has long been a magnet for yoga instructors and pupils alike. Private Mykonos, which takes its name from the ultra-fashionable jewel of the Cyclades, is the ultimate place to live out fantasies of learning yoga like a celebrity. The newly built structure gleams under the Greek sun. With a fully fitted gym and massage spaces, there are many inspiring places to set a yoga class, not to mention swimming pools and Jacuzzis to complete the relaxation process afterwards. Private Mykonos There’s no better way to heal and improve body and mind than a yoga class before breakfast in one of these six world class settings. Destination: ItalyDestinationsFamily TravelFood and Drink 10 reasons to visit Puglia by Paola Fiocchi Van den Brande June 8, 2017 written by Paola Fiocchi Van den Brande Blue Flag beaches, white-washed villages, slow life, great food, welcoming locals and over 200 days a year of sunshine is what attracted me and my husband to Puglia, the “heel of Italy”, some ten years ago. Once Italy’s best kept secret, the region has enjoyed a surge in tourism in recent years, to be attributed greatly to celebrity weddings, Hollywood actors purchasing run down Masserie and a very prominent international marketing campaign run by the Region of Puglia across Europe. Once snubbed by discerning travellers in favour of more glitzy destinations such as Capri and Sardinia’s Emerald Coast or for the “Chiantishire”, Puglia has revealed its cultural and historic heritage and natural beauties becoming this year’s hot spot destination. The olive tree. A true symbol of Puglia. If you are still unfamiliar with Puglia, here are my top ten reasons why Puglia should be in your bucket list. 1 Blue Flag beaches With over 800 kilometres of coastline, both rocky and sandy, Puglia offers visitors plenty of spots to sunbathe and swim. Puglia has been awarded this year with no less than 11 Blue Flags, a testimony to the region’s commitment to its environment. Crystal clear waters, sandy beaches, lagoons, grottoes, coves and underwater marine life surround the peninsula. Just take a boat out to sea and discover unspoilt, wonderful corners. Photo courtesy SpiaggeSalentine.it 2 Food and Wine This subject deserves a blog post of its own and I have indeed written at lengths about Puglia’s culinary delights and gastronomical experiences. From “orecchiette pasta’ to “tarallini, from “pasticciotti” to “spaghetti ai ricci di mare”. Authentic, locally-sourced ingredients are prepared with great simplicity and yet resulting in a provocation of all senses. Puglia is also the largest Italian producer of red wine, such as the Negroamaro, and extra virgin olive oil. L’Altro Baffo in Otranto 3 Sunshine Puglia enjoys over 200 days of pure sunshine a year. The most pleasant seasons to visit the area are Spring and Autumn, when beaches are deserted and you can easily stroll through the small alleyways of Gallipoli or Otranto. if you are lucky, you can still dip in the water well into November. 4 Slow living If you need a break from your erratic life, then head to Puglia, for authentic experiences, slow-paced villages, back-to-nature living, farm-to-table eating, small family run business and simplicity. If you are looking for a Starbucks lifestyle, you will be disappointed. As soon as you step out of the plane, just change gears and take a siesta in the afternoon! Afternoon siesta under olive trees 5 History Puglia is not just beaches and sunshine. Those interested in sightseeing and culture, will be pleasantly surprised by its prehistoric ruins and UNESCO sites such as Castel Del Monte, or the fortified town of Otranto, the capital of Baroque – Lecce- , medieval towns such as Trani, Alberobello with its unique Trulli, the white-washed town of Ostuni – also known as “The White City”, Grottaglie and its hand-made potteries, more churches and cathedrals. Much of its historic Greek heritage is still present in many areas of the Salento region, where a dialect deriving from ancient Greek is still widely spoken. Otranto 6 Sleeping in a Masseria or Trullo The term “Masseria” literally means ‘fortified farmhouse” , which was built and designed to be self-sustained. Authentic, run down masserie have been recently salvaged and transformed into luxury boutique hotels and holiday rentals , whilst still preserving much of its architecture, its authentic Salentino style and still producing own vegetables, oil or wine. The term “Trullo” means a small round dry stone hut with a conical roof. Their style of construction is specific to the Itria ValleyTrulli generally were built as temporary field shelters and storehouses or, as permanent dwellings by small land owners or agricultural workers. The most famous concentration of “trulli’ is in the ever popular town of Alberobello, well worth a visit. Trullo Angela, a luxury vacation rental 7 Shopping Puglia is not Milan, so you won’t find Pradas and Armanis here, however, there are some artefacts and artisanal products worth taking back home such as pottery from Grottaglie, papier-mâché puppets, linen from Society in Lecce or Tessitura Giaquinto in Otranto, bikini from Simonetta Starace. Linen by Giaquinto 8 Welcoming people Apulian people are among the friendliest and warmest in Italy. Families with kids will find an accommodating environment and everyone will feel welcome. Sea urchins, freshly caught 9 Town festivals The list of town festivals, fairs, costumed events, historical parades, folk cerimonies, religious processions is very rich. All year round, in various towns, you can partake in local activities from the Octopus festival to the Procession of Hooded Penitents, from the Swordfish festival to the Papier-mâché fair. Town festival in Carpignano Salentino 10 Salento Style A unique style which extends from architecture and interior design to a typical philosophy of life. Slowly becoming internationally acclaimed – just as the ‘Tuscan Style’- Salento Style is laid-back, humble, rural and simple on the surface, but sophisticated, elegant and aristocratic on the inside. Congedo publishes some wonderful books about the authentic Salento Style, if you want to find out more. Salento style I hope I have convinced you to explore Puglia. Once you do, please share with us your ten reasons to visit Puglia. June 8, 2017 0 comments 0 FacebookTwitterPinterestEmail
Business TravelCorporate VenuesDestinationsEventsVenues for special events Five Best Villas for Business Retreats by Paola Fiocchi Van den Brande April 21, 2017 written by Paola Fiocchi Van den Brande Few seasoned luxury travellers would dispute that a villa in a stunning part of Southern Europe is the ideal setting for the perfect holiday. However, there are certain properties which also provide an innovative and inspiring environment for a business retreat. A private space which sponsors clarity of thought, corporate bonding, and the opportunity to get the best out of colleagues in a relaxed yet productive setting. Villa La Tosca in the lovely French settlement of Lanton, Aquitaine is a landmark and historic beach front property which offers every conceivable amenity for a business retreat. Its huge dining area and salon combine beauty with highly flexible functionality, and can be bespoke into a range of different working facilities including a seminar space, large conference area with marquee, break-out zone and corporate dining, all entwined with breath-taking views of the sea and gardens. A formal haute cuisine kitchen readily caters up to the property’s generous capacity, and there is also a full office space with desk, printer and scanner and a cinema/conference room with space for 40 people. Villa La Tosca The clue is in the name at the Menorca Prestige, a jewel of the Balearics and a 250 acre estate which offers the quality and range of facilities for business guests that might more readily be anticipated from a five star boutique hotel. Sleeping up to 22 guests, the emphasis lies squarely on excellent service, with a full in-house concierge team available to ensure a memorable blend of vocational activities and well-earned subsequent relaxation. It benefits from being an accessible property and from a setting that is the perfect springboard for an away day yacht charter or tour. Prestige Menorca The grand Altaserra Wine Resort in Montebenichi, Tuscany subtly and seamlessly combines many of the best ingredients for a corporate retreat. Comfortably accommodating sixteen adults in total, there is both a main building and an annex, allowing for a dispersed way of working and living. At the heart of the residence is the wonderful function room. Accommodating up to 220 people, it is set inside a vaulted, converted wine cellar. The excellent wine tastings that the property boasts also provide a fascinating and very Tuscan element or conclusion to a day of business. Villa Altaserra Wine Resort Set in the verdant splendour of Montaione, Villa Ciggiano is another Tuscan manor house well-established for professional breaks. Offering a more intimate six bedroom setting, it is perfect for smaller but high powered executive gatherings in which, perhaps around the striking twelve-seater dining table or the private fishing lake, ideas can be crystallised and deals can be brokered. As with Altaserra, all the treasures of Tuscany are on the doorstep for business days out, as well as easy access to the region’s excellent European and global transport networks. Villa Ciggiano The same can also be said of Country Relais and Spa Le Capanne. Set in the shimmering Tuscan hills of Volterra, between 18 and 22 businesspeople can savour the delights of this immaculately renovated rural idyll. There are dedicated conference facilities as well as a more relaxed common room for informal meetings. Cooking classes, wine tastings and olive harvesting can all be laid on as lively team building experiences. These five magical properties are a productivity aid and a bonus scheme all in one, a place for ideas to play out, creativity to flow, and collective memories and loyalties to be forged, in some of Europe’s most superb locations. Corporate VenuesDestination: FranceDestinationsExperiencesHoneymoon destinationsIdeal for CouplesWedding Venues The Best Wedding Destinations in France and Spain by Paola Fiocchi Van den Brande March 21, 2017 written by Paola Fiocchi Van den Brande The appeal of the cuisine, landscapes and heritage of rural France and the Balearic islands is universally acknowledged. Many happy couples have also been initiated into the secret that with the right luxury destination property, they are perfect wedding locales. Three exceptional properties in particular represent the very best on offer in these regions. Villa la Tosca enjoys picture postcard beach front surroundings in Lanton, Aquitaine. The villa, ecological pool and gardens combine to create a storybook quality. The pretty little Gallic bridge, fountains, ancient walls and vistas are ideal for both photographs and quiet contemplation before and after a wedding event. The house sleeps 15 guests across 8 bedrooms, all of them with luxuriously appointed en suite bathrooms. There is a 40 person capacity cinema for enjoying videos of the nuptials. The kitchen offers a mind-blowing range of facilities and the perfect base from which to cater for guests in the capacious formal dining room and salon. Wedding at La Tosca A number of exterior features combine to enhance the appeal of Villa La Tosca as a wedding venue. There is the very useful option to put up a marquee, and there is a full time concierge and holiday coordinator. The staff at Villa la Tosca have been singled out for special praise by couples who have married there, for their attentiveness and commitment. The villa’s setting, the Bassin d’Arcachon, is renowned for its incredible natural light and fresh, health-giving air, offering a bright and auspicious start for newlyweds. Wedding at La Tosca Lying 25km from Chartres, Les Communs offers a particularly unique and fascinating wedding setting. Dating back to the eighteenth century, it is hard to believe when admiring it now that it was once the stable block for the Chateau de Charbonnières. On a truly grand scale, it can sleep 36 guests across 18 elegant bedrooms, including three family suites, perfect for accommodating wedding guests. Les Communs For relaxing and detoxing before and after the ceremony, there is both an indoor pool and a hammam. The property has a wealth of features to keep younger wedding attendees entertained, including a playroom with a football table and table tennis, a petanque play area and a living room with a pool table, video games and even a jukebox. The ivy-clad frontage of the expansive buildings, and the lush gardens, are a deeply appealing background to wedding photographs. Les Communs also has the distinction of having its host couple onsite eleven months of the year. They are adept at orientation around the site, private air and car transfers, and are the ideal sounding board for imaginative touches and hidden delights of the estate, to make ceremonies truly special. Another dream wedding destination for many is the Balearic Islands, and there is very little to compete with the superb villa Prestige Menorca, nestled in San Climent, Mahón. Menorca has attracted courting couples for centuries with its sun-soaked peace and natural beauty. Sleeping 22 guests in 11 bedrooms within a sweeping 250 acre estate, this stunning private home only opened its doors in 2015. Wedding at Prestige Menorca Both the airport and Mahón are just moments away but this convenience is complemented by a splendid rural tranquillity. The outdoor pool and barbeque lie within beautiful pleasure gardens, and the sea view, with Mallorca visible on clear days, can be enjoyed from most of the villa’s vantage points. The private cook that comes with the property prepares memorably excellent regional cuisine, which can be worked off in the high spec onsite gymnasium. There are many other experts to hand to craft a truly luxurious wedding experience, from an events planner to a Pilates instructor. The ease of organising private flights and yacht charters is perfect for honeymooners. Prestige Menorca Though their features and appeal are very diverse, what all three of these properties share is the ability to bespoke any aspect of their offering to the highest possible specification to attain the ideal of the perfect wedding day. AirportsBusiness TravelExperiencesFood and DrinkVenues for special eventsWedding Venues The Best Villas for Wine Lovers by Paola Fiocchi Van den Brande March 7, 2017 written by Paola Fiocchi Van den Brande There are a growing number of wine connoisseurs who wish to combine a bucolic holiday setting with a high quality wine tasting experience, as well as an education in new or unusual vintages in the site that is producing them. Italy has some of the most alluring villas for wine lovers in Europe. Villa Altaserra Wine Resort in Tuscany is one of the most exceptional. A five bedroom, centuries old stone Tuscan farmhouse estate once owned by the Medici family, it has 22 hectares of vineyards producing two very different wines united by a mellow, elegant finish. The local traditional wine comes from the Sangiovese grape, grown in rocky soil. To satisfy the demands of the international market, a combination of Sangiovese with Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are used, grown in the more fertile soil of the rolling vineyards. Villa Altaserra Wine Resort Also to be found in the famed Chianti wine region is the beautiful Castellare de Sernigi estate. The seven bedroom manor house, on the edge of an ancient village, has an entire lower ground level devoted to the wine and olive oil produced on the estate. Guests are able to purchase from the extensive collection as a highlight of their stay. There is the opportunity for a sommelier to visit the villa to offer their expertise in food and wine pairing. It is also possible to take guided tours of the Chianti region, in which wine tastings are combined with sampling meats and foraging for wild herbs with a knowledgeable local. Castellare de’ Sernigi Moving on from the region but not the nation, Torre Scilano is a unique property in Lombardy. An Alpine chalet crafted from a historic tower, the villa, which has featured in a number of style features, is surrounded by its own vineyards. The Lombardy region is famous for its excellent Sassella and Inferno wines and is the perfect place to get acquainted with some of Italy’s finest wines. Torre Scilano Naturally, viticulture heavyweight France also has some truly superb places for wine loving travellers. La Bastide de Vignes, situated in the Languedoc-Roussillon wine region, is an enchanting traditional country home with panoramic views of the Pyrenees. The village in which the property is set has its own Chateau which produces some great wines. Amongst the highly rated wines from Château Belveze are its Malepere and the award-winning Château Cabezac Grande Cuvée Belvèze. La Bastide de Vignes For a charming combination of wine and food odyssey, Villa La Tosca is the perfect setting, in the Bordeaux region. With eight bedrooms in a lavish historic property right by the sea at Lanton, it is an excellent base for oyster tasting, wine tours and even helicopter tours over the Bordeaux region. The villa is also pleased to organise dinner with wine pairing on site. Everywhere from the library to the cinema to the sweeping grounds is an ideal place to sample wines in the comfort and privacy of La Tosca. Villa La Tosca Unlike France and Italy, Canada does not necessarily spring immediately to mind as a destination for wine lovers, but Villa Orion is a truly inspiring villa from which to explore the 100 best wineries in Penticton, Naramata, Okanagan Falls, Oliver, Osoyoos, Summerland, Peachland, Kelowna and Vernon. Villa Orion is a luxurious, elegant modern property in British Columbia. All the wineries are located between a 3 and 90 minute drive from the property, justifying its reputation as the wine capital of Canada. There is easy access to both a concierge well versed in the top winery list and a wine tour operator. Many of the wineries have exceptional restaurants on site, including nearby cult eating spots Vanilla Pod and the Hillside Estate Winery & Bistro. Villa Orion This cross-section of very different properties united in their offering of exceptional, inspiring vintages in beautiful natural settings should inspire any wine lover to make one of them the focal point of their next wine journey of discovery. DestinationsFood and DrinkSki ChaletsSki HolidaysTravel News Five of Europe’s Most Quirky Après Ski Venues by Paola Fiocchi Van den Brande January 30, 2017 written by Paola Fiocchi Van den Brande Anyone enjoying a winter sports break in Europe will be familiar with the pleasurable experience of après ski after a long day of skiing or snowboarding. Whilst there is a plethora of options to suit every taste and budget, there are also a few truly unusual and unexpected places to explore. The Zillertal Valley houses some après ski surprises as well as some of Austria’s best slopes. Harakiri has to be the most colourful and unexpected of the drinking options. A landmark structure kitted out with striking lighting and décor, its focus is placed squarely on hedonism. Table dancers, star DJs and cheerful service all combine to create a night to remember. Photo courtesy of Harakiri Bar Nearby Traum Am Wald in the village of Hart offers another significant landmark building, a stunning traditional wood-built chalet for up to nine guests. A world away from Harakiri’s convivial partying, Traum Am Wald has no close neighbours except the local wildlife that may be spotted around the property’s lovely surroundings. Amongst many luxurious touches emphasising relaxation, there is a Finnish sauna, rain shower and a heated mosaic lounger. Pamporovo in the Rhodope Mountains has a fantastic range of nightlife options, but the most unique is cult favourite The White Hart. Offering the novelty of a British pub atmosphere in the heart of the Bulgarian mountains, it offers hearty all day dining and drinking. Another stand out feature is its wildly popular Thursday night karaoke parties. Just 17km away from Pamporovo, Villa Gella is a wonderful ski chalet option. With living space across four levels and accommodating up to 15 guests, it is the perfect place to take the party back to after The White Hart. The sensational subterranean spa are includes a 10m indoor swimming pool, massage table and a steam room. A professionally equipped kitchen and expansive dining area, as well as gorgeous fireplaces throughout the property, offer a haven when the après ski festivities end. Photo courtesy of The White Hart, Pamporovo Il Cantinone restaurant in Madesimo is a rare find, an excellent Michelin star restaurant right in the heart of ski country. It also has the extremely thoughtful and, in fine dining, unusual feature of a children’s’ menu for mini gourmets. Its seven course tasting menu is legendary and for many this restaurant has become as much of a destination as the ski slopes. Il Cantinone, Madesimo It is not just the après ski venue that is unique in this part of Lombardy. Three lucky guests can be accommodated at Torre Scilano, a rare, architect-designed structure which has featured in numerous style pieces. Torre Scilano enjoys an enviable location in the village of Piuro within the Valchiavenna Valley. The living room of this hugely characterful dwelling offers spectacular views of the valley. In the region which founded it, enjoying slow cooking is an integral part of the Piedmontese après ski experience, but there are various features which ensure that L’Antica Spelonca in Sestriere stand out. The most striking is its dining room – a vaulted cellar perfect for cosy dining. Antiquities and rugs adorn the ancient setting and it serves up an excellent tartare which is an unexpected feature on regional menus. Historic elegance is also the order of the day at Baita1697, a perfectly converted seventeenth century Piedmontese farmhouse. Its generous proportions can house up to 18 guests and throughout the house benefits from the impeccable taste of interior designer Lucie McCullough. Everything is geared up for ultra-opulent fun, from the cinema room to the outdoor hot tub. Photo courtesy of TripAdvisor, L’Antica Spelonca in Sestriere What might not be expected from après ski in Italy’s classy Val Gardena is a combination of Irish craic and ice hockey, but that is exactly what The Goalies Pub cheerfully serves up to appreciative crowds. It is the best place in the region for a perfect pint of Guinness, complete with foam shamrock on top. Open from 9am to 2am, it offers après ski, “pre-ski” and late night fun all in one. The team are committed to only playing vintage rock and roll tunes, and one of the barmen, Alex, has been known to play the saxophone live too. If The Goalies is all about traditional tankard-clinking, beautiful Cesa Selva offers a contrasting but equally appealing sleek, modern take on chalet living. Ideal for families, it has an on-site hammam, a great range of entertainment options and bunk beds in some of the five bedrooms. Each of these lovely properties has their own story to tell, a story which is only enhanced by the quirky memories and anecdotes that the nearby après ski venues can offer.
