Ingredients for the perfect wedding in Italy

by Paola Fiocchi Van den Brande October 25, 2023
written by Paola Fiocchi Van den Brande

Interview with Sandra Di Marcantonio, wedding expert.

Getting married in Italy is an enchanting dream for many couples, captivated by the sweet taste of a Mediterranean lifestyle, delicious food, balmy weather and the prospect of dining under olive trees and starry skies.

A destination wedding in Italy is the perfect opportunity to create the most memorable experience for both you and those partaking in your celebrations.

Villa Altaserra Wine Resort Tuscany

Passepartout Homes had the pleasure to interview Sandra Di Marcantonio, our talented in-house wedding expert, on the secrets to the perfect wedding in Italy.

What are the 3 most important ingredients for a successful wedding in Italy?

1) Finding and establishing a relationship with the right vendors.

2) Acknowledging that Italians are not bilingual, above all they are not proficient in English. Therefore you’ll need a helping hand from somebody who’s fluent in Italian and who understands the Italian society and culture as well.

3) Accept that things can take time in Italy. La dolce vita, you know… ?!

Why should couples consider a wedding abroad, specifically in Italy?

If there is one thing that the worldwide pandemic has taught us, it’s how special our family and friends are. A destination wedding in Italy is a great way to make up for lost time and spoil them.

Besides, would it be an understatement to say that Italy is one of the most beautiful places on Earth? Think about how beautiful your wedding pictures will look thanks to those those scenic landscapes, picturesque city centres and stunning nature.

Should couples consider hiring a wedding planner with experience on weddings in Italy?

I think it can certainly help you save lots of time and money to book a wedding planner or a coordinator for the day. On your wedding day you should be living your dream with your spouse and concentrate on creating memories with your friends and family. You should not be bothered with questions about the Prosecco, the occupied parking space of the live band, or the missing shoes of your maid of honour.

What are the main considerations to make when getting married in Italy?

1) Time is relative. 🙂 Be classy, absolutely not sassy! Food is a religion!

2) Traditional italian confetti are a must have as a wedding favor for your guests. They are authentic, delicious and a total surprise for your guests.

3) Don’t aim for a wedding in the weekend, but prefer a week day when everything is more relaxed.

4) Find someone to rely on that is fluent in Italian and can help you tackle last minute problems.

5) Step away from traditional wedding locations such as Tuscany and discover hidden gems in Umbria or Puglia.

6) Flowers and floral decor can be more expensive in Italy. Focus more on lightning: very trending and money saving at the same time.

7) Aperitivo time: include a cocktail hour without canapés, but with several food stands and utterly delicious food. Forget about mac n’ cheese, pepperoni pizza and chicken parmegian. Those recipes don’t even exist in Italy! God forbid! Go for authenic, simple but tasty, Italian style aperitivi stands. I’ll promise you’ll love it.

Why choose a private holiday villa for your destination wedding?

Well, first of all the private holiday villa’s are a dream. But there are three more significant reasons that explain why a private villa is your go to wedding venue.

We expect the shift in the wedding industry to continue.  The trend to more intimate affairs will stay relevant and more and more couples will opt for renting a private villa, castle, masseria or a vineyard mansion and host the wedding with an external catering company.

What can be defined as the ‘Pintimate Wedding’- a personalised and intimate micro wedding –  has surged out of the many Covid restrictions that were placed on couples around the world back in 2020/21. Many couples opted for a much more relaxed affair with a guest list of 30 or under, with a fusion of formal and informal and much bigger per head budget than you get with a larger guest list. Less is more once again.

The focus will be more on the guest experience than anything else. Real thought is being put into that journey the guest goes as a part of the wedding. Gastronomy, beautiful table decor and lightning, welcome goodie bags, wedding favors, the wedding venue and the complete personalisation of the wedcation will be the new standard.

Lastly, backyard weddings are here to stay, but not all backyards are created with equal opportunity to separate the ceremony, cocktail hour and dinner. Renting a spacious private villa is an excellent solution for a all-in-one wedding event space using all features of the estate to maximize the experience of the couple and their party.

What is the best season to marry in Italy?

This is a difficult question, because according to me it depends on the theme and location of the wedding.

Italy is such a various country when it comes to landscapes, architecture and general vibe. It is very difficult to define one wedding season for a country like Italy. I mean, imagine a wedding at the beautiful Como lake in spring. Or a summer wedding in June at the Amalfi coast? Fall would be the perfect time of the year for a rustic-glam wedding in Puglia, because the temperatures are no longer skyrocketing. Speaking of autumn, can you imagine the beautiful autumn color palette in Umbria that serves as a natural decor for you garden wedding? How can I forget about the mountains? The cosy feeling of a Holiday- Christmas wedding in the snow…

I think Italy is the perfect wedding location 11 months of the year, but I would advise to skip August when the entire country takes off and is in holiday mood.

Dress! Should I buy in Italy or at home?

Definitely at home! Some of the best designers in bridal wear are from Italian origin and I perfectly understand why a bride would want to fly to Italy and go shopping for her Italian wedding dress. Given the current circumstances, I would advise to research for the right retailer in your surroundings and screen their collections.

All the Italian collections are worldwide available. I believe that’s the savest option for the moment. Trust me you don’t want your dress stucked in Italy, while you cannot travel and go try it on for the alterations. If I were a bride to be, I would play it safe.

Lastly, many bridal brands are hosting online consultations. So, if your dream wedding dress is not available in the bridal boutique near you, you can always get in touch with the brand and shop your dress online.

Exploring Sicily’s Charming Archipelago. Why Island-hopping Is The Best Way.

by Paola Fiocchi Van den Brande August 28, 2023
written by Paola Fiocchi Van den Brande

When we think of island hopping, idyllic Greek or tropical Caribbean islands first spring to mind, right?

Have you ever considered island hopping in Sicily? It can be an incredible and memorable experience. Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea and is surrounded by several smaller islands, each with its own unique charm and attractions. The Sicilian archipelago includes several notable islands, the most famous of which are the Aeolian Islands (Isole Eolie), a group of seven main islands and several smaller islets. In addition to the Aeolian Islands, there are other smaller islands and islets near Sicily that you might consider visiting as well, such as Ustica and Pantelleria.

Here are some of the popular island in Sicily you might consider including in your island-hopping itinerary:

Lipari: This is the largest of the Aeolian Islands and offers a mix of stunning landscapes, historical sites, and beautiful beaches. You can visit the Archaeological Museum, explore the town’s charming streets, and relax on its beaches.

Vulcano: Known for its mud baths and hot springs, Vulcano offers a unique experience for visitors. You can hike up to the crater and enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding islands.

Salina: This island is famous for its lush vegetation, picturesque villages, and excellent wines. It’s a great place for hiking and enjoying the natural beauty of the Aeolian archipelago.

Panarea: A chic and fashionable island, Panarea is known for its nightlife, luxury resorts, and crystal-clear waters. It’s a great destination for those seeking a lively atmosphere.

Stromboli: Home to one of Europe’s most active volcanoes, Stromboli offers the opportunity to witness volcanic activity and even hike to the summit to see the eruptions at night.

Pantelleria: Though located a bit further from the Sicilian coast, Pantelleria is worth a visit for its unique landscapes, thermal waters, and traditional stone dwellings.

Ustica: Often referred to as the “Black Pearl of the Mediterranean,” Ustica is a haven for divers and snorkelers due to its clear waters and underwater biodiversity.

Lipari. Photo by Lyle Wilkinson for Unsplash.

Traveling with kids? Then probably Lipari would be your best choice.

7 Reasons to visit Lipari

Diverse Attractions: Lipari has a mix of attractions that can appeal to both adults and children. Families can explore the historic town, visit the Archaeological Museum, and learn about the island’s volcanic history.

Beaches: Lipari offers several beautiful beaches with clear waters, making it an ideal destination for swimming, playing in the sand, and enjoying water activities with children.

Boat Tours: The Aeolian Islands are known for their boat tours, and Lipari serves as a central hub for exploring the other islands in the archipelago. Taking short boat trips to neighboring islands like Vulcano or Salina can be exciting for kids.

Accessibility: Lipari is relatively easy to reach from the mainland, making it convenient for families traveling with children. You can take a ferry or hydrofoil from various ports in Sicily.

Natural Beauty: Lipari’s landscapes are diverse and captivating, providing opportunities for family hikes and outdoor exploration. The island’s volcanic features and lush vegetation can spark children’s curiosity.

Relaxed Atmosphere: Lipari has a laid-back atmosphere that is suitable for families seeking a peaceful and enjoyable vacation. The island offers a break from the hustle and bustle of larger cities.

Cultural Experiences: While enjoying the natural beauty, families can also learn about local culture, traditions, and cuisine through interactions with the friendly residents.

When planning your island-hopping adventure in Sicily, make sure to consider ferry schedules and availability unless you are renting your own private yacht or catamaran. Depending on the time you have and your preferences, you can create an itinerary that allows you to explore the beauty, culture, and history of these diverse Mediterranean islands.

Best time to visit the Sicilian Islands?

If you are chartering your own private boat, then May to September would be the best months to visit the Sicilian Islands. If you are planning to visit the islands by ferry and staying in hotels/B&Bs/villa rentals, then avoid the month of August if you can due to its hot temperatures and huge crowds.

How to reach the Sicilian Islands?

Reaching the islands of the Sicilian archipelago is an enriching journey on itself.

As there are no airports on any of the islands a part from Pantelleria and Lampedusa, the quickest way is to fly to Sicily first.

Choose Catania or Palermo for the Eolian Islands. From there, you need to reach the ports of Milazzo, Messina or Palermo from which you can take ferries or hydrofoils. Timetables vary according to the season so please check carefully to ensure there transport is available in mid or low seasons.

Choose Palermo for the Egadi islands. From there, travel to Marsala to catch ferries or hydrofoils.

Choose Palermo, Trapani and Catania to  fly to Pantelleria.  During peak seasons there are also flights from major Italian airports.

Choose Palermo and Catania to  fly to Lampedusa  Or fly to Lampedusa from Milan, Rome and Naples.

Helpful Summary

  • Eolian Islands Archipelago: Lipari, Vulcano, Salina, Filicudi, Alicudi Panarea, and a few smaller inhabited islands such as Basiluzzo, Lisca Bianca and Strombolicchio.
  • Egadi Islands Archipelago: Favignana, Levanzo, Marettimo, Formica and the smaller islands of Maraone and Preveto.
  • Pelagie Islands Archipelago: Lampedusa, Isola dei Conigli, Lampione and Linosa.

Less known by tourists are the Stagnone Islands Archipelago and Ciclopi Islands Archipelago.

The unique island of Pantelleria and the island of  Ustica (sadly known for a deadly plane crash in 1980) do not belong to any archipelago.

Nevertheless, I could not give in to the temptation to look up 5 travel guides because if anything, this year managed to acerbate my wanderlust and desire to escape to far-flung destinations.

Discover The Greek Island of Alonnisos

by Paola Fiocchi Van den Brande May 24, 2023
written by Paola Fiocchi Van den Brande

Have you ever heard of the Greek island of Alonnisos located in the Aegean Sea? After Skiathos and Skopelos, it is the third member of the Northern Sporades.

Discover with us the pristine island of Alonnisos and why you must add it to your bucket list.

The island of Alonnisos, is famous for its natural beauty and its designation as a protected marine park. Here are a few key points for which Alonnisos is known:

Top 5 reasons to visit the island

1. Alonnisos National Marine Park: Alonnisos is home to the first designated National Marine Park in Greece. Established in 1992, the marine park aims to protect the endangered Mediterranean monk seal, which finds refuge in the surrounding waters and rocky shores of Alonnisos. The park also encompasses several smaller islands and islets.

2. Pristine Beaches: Alonnisos boasts stunning beaches with crystal-clear turquoise waters. Many of these beaches are secluded and unspoiled, offering visitors a tranquil and serene environment to relax and enjoy the natural surroundings.

3. Charming Villages: The island features picturesque villages with traditional architecture and a laid-back atmosphere. The main village, also called Alonnisos or Chora, is perched on a hill and offers breathtaking views of the Aegean Sea. Its narrow streets, whitewashed houses, and cozy tavernas provide visitors with an authentic Greek island experience.

4. Scenic Hiking Trails: Alonnisos provides several hiking trails that lead through its lush landscapes, pine forests, and olive groves. These trails offer nature enthusiasts the opportunity to explore the island’s beauty and discover hidden gems along the way.

5. Delicious Seafood: Being an island, Alonnisos is renowned for its fresh and delicious seafood. Visitors can enjoy a wide variety of seafood dishes, including locally caught fish, octopus, and other Mediterranean delicacies.

Amazing beach of Milia in Alonnisos island, Sporades, Greece.

Recommended restaurants

While Alonnisos is not particularly known for any specific famous restaurant, there are several highly regarded dining establishments on the island that are loved by both locals and visitors. Here are a few well-regarded restaurants in Alonnisos:

1. Ostria Restaurant: situated in the village of Votsi, Ostria Restaurant is renowned for its stunning views and delicious Greek and Mediterranean dishes. It specializes in seafood and offers a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

2. To Paradosiako: found in the village of Steni Vala, To Paradosiako is a family-run taverna that serves authentic Greek cuisine, including fresh seafood and local specialties. The restaurant prides itself on its warm hospitality and relaxed ambiance.

3. Meltemi: located on Megalos Mourtias beach, the beach taverna serves Greek food with many vegetarian and vegan options.

The old village of Chora in Alonnisos island, Greece.

Best beaches

Alonnisos is known for its tranquil and unspoiled beaches, so it doesn’t have the same vibrant beach club scene as some other Greek islands. However, there are a few beachfront establishments where visitors can enjoy refreshments, sun loungers, and beachside service. While they may not be as famous as beach clubs in other destinations, they provide a relaxing beach experience. Here are a couple of beachfront options on Alonnisos:

Agios Dimitrios: this is one of the best beaches on the island and offers a laid-back atmosphere where visitors can relax on sun beds while enjoying drinks and light snacks. The beach itself is known for its beautiful pebbles, gently sloping sea and crystal-clear waters.

Glyfa Beach: this beach offers sun loungers, umbrellas, and a small selection of refreshments. It’s a tranquil spot where visitors can unwind and enjoy the natural beauty of the beach. Glyfa Beach is located near the northern end of Steni Vala. This unique, unspoiled spot situated near the village of Steni Vala offers natural green surroundings and a stunning view to the Aegean Sea. Sandy with some pebbles.

Please note that the beach scene on Alonnisos is generally more serene and less focused on beach clubs and loud entertainment. Visitors come to the island to enjoy the pristine beaches, clear waters, and peaceful surroundings.

How to reach the island

To reach the island of Alonnisos, you have a few options depending on your starting point. Here are the common methods of transportation:

Ferry: Alonnisos is connected to the mainland and other nearby islands by ferry services. There are regular ferry routes from the ports of Volos, Agios Konstantinos, and Mantoudi on the mainland, as well as from the neighboring islands of Skiathos and Skopelos. The ferry schedules may vary depending on the season, so it’s advisable to check the timetables in advance.

Flying and ferry combination: If you prefer to fly, you can take a flight to the nearby island of Skiathos or the mainland city of Volos and then continue your journey to Alonnisos by ferry. Skiathos has an international airport with connections to several European cities, while Volos has a domestic airport.

Private boat or yacht: Alonnisos has a harbor in the main village, Chora, where private boats and yachts can dock. If you have your own vessel or are chartering one, you can sail directly to the island.

It’s important to note that ferry schedules and availability may change, especially during the off-peak season. It’s advisable to check the ferry schedules in advance, book your tickets, and plan your trip accordingly.

Where to Stay

We have selected for you one of the most beautiful and luxurious private villas on the Island, Villa Alonnisos III.

A quick guide to Lucca, Tuscany

by Paola Fiocchi Van den Brande May 4, 2023
written by Paola Fiocchi Van den Brande

If you are looking for little gems to visit in Tuscany, add Lucca to your must-visit list, a town often skipped in favour of other more internationally known destinations. Our quick guide will explain why.

Lucca is a charming medieval city, known for its beautiful historic center, well-preserved walls, and its rich cultural heritage. There is so much to see and do in Lucca and to help you make the most of your trip, here are our top five things to do, see and taste.

1. Walk or bike the city walls
Lucca is famous for its well-preserved city walls. These walls date back to the Renaissance era and were built to protect the city from invaders. Today, the walls have been turned into a pedestrian and bike path that offers stunning views of the city and its surroundings. The path is about 4 Km long and takes about an hour to walk or 30 minutes to bike. Along the way, you will pass by several historic buildings and churches, as well as beautiful gardens and parks.

2. Visit the Cathedral of San Martino
The Cathedral of San Martino is one of the most important religious sites in Lucca. It is located in the heart of the city and dates back to the 11th century. The cathedral is known for its stunning façade and beautiful interior, which is filled with works of art from the Renaissance era. One of the highlights of the cathedral is the Volto Santo, a crucifix in walnut that is believed to have been carved by Nicodemus, one of the disciples of Jesus.

3. Explore Piazza dell’Anfiteatro
Piazza dell’Anfiteatro is one of the most unique and charming squares in Lucca. It was built on the site of an ancient Roman amphitheater and has retained its oval shape. Today, the square is a bustling hub of restaurants, cafes, and shops, and is a popular spot for locals and tourists alike. The architecture of the surrounding buildings is stunning, and the atmosphere is lively and vibrant.

4. Take a stroll through the Botanical Gardens
The Botanical Gardens of Lucca are a hidden gem that is often overlooked by tourists. They are located just outside the city walls and are a beautiful oasis of peace and tranquility. The gardens were established in the early 19th century and cover an area of about 2.5 hectares. They are home to over 1,500 species of plants, including several rare and endangered species. The gardens are also home to several historic buildings and fountains, making them a perfect spot for a leisurely stroll.

5. Visit the Guinigi Tower
The Guinigi Tower is one of the most iconic landmarks in Lucca. It is a 14th-century tower that is known for its rooftop garden, which is filled with oak trees. The tower was built by the Guinigi family, who were one of the most prominent families in Lucca during the Middle Ages. Today, visitors can climb the tower’s 232 steps to reach the rooftop garden, which offers stunning views of the city and its surroundings.

How far is Lucca from the coast?
Lucca is located in the inland area of Tuscany, and is not directly on the coast. The closest coastal city to Lucca is Viareggio, which is approximately 20 Km (12.5 miles) away and can be easily reached by train or car. Other popular coastal destinations in the area, such as Forte dei Marmi (36Km) and Pisa (19Km), are also within easy reach from Lucca.

Where is the nearest airport to Lucca?
The nearest airport to Lucca is the Galileo Galilei International Airport (PSA), located in Pisa, which is approximately 20 Km (12.5 miles) away. The airport serves several airlines that offer domestic and international flights to and from major cities in Europe and beyond. From the airport, travelers can easily reach Lucca by train, bus, or car, with travel times ranging from 20 minutes to an hour depending on the mode of transportation.

What is a popular dish you must order in Lucca?
Tuscany is, of course, famous for its rich culinary traditions. There are many delicious dishes that you can try while in Lucca, but one of the most popular is “pappa al pomodoro“. It is a hearty soup made with bread, ripe tomatoes, garlic, basil, and extra virgin olive oil. The bread is soaked in the tomato sauce until it becomes soft and flavorful, creating a delicious and comforting dish that is perfect for cooler days. Another popular dish in Lucca is “tordelli lucchesi”, which are handmade pasta pockets filled with meat, cheese, and vegetables, typically served with a meat-based sauce. Both dishes can be found in many restaurants throughout Lucca and are definitely worth trying.

Who was a famous person from Lucca?
Lucca has been home to many notable figures throughout history, including artists, musicians, writers, and political leaders. One of the most famous people associated with Lucca is Giacomo Puccini, the renowned composer of operas such as “La Bohème,” “Tosca,” and “Madame Butterfly.” Puccini was born in Lucca in 1858 and spent much of his childhood in the city. His family had a long tradition of music-making, and Puccini went on to become one of the most influential composers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Today, visitors to Lucca can visit the Puccini Museum, which is dedicated to the composer and houses many of his personal belongings and musical instruments.

Crostini neri dish from Tuscany, Italy

Crostini Neri – the original Tuscan recipe

by Paola Fiocchi Van den Brande April 10, 2023
written by Paola Fiocchi Van den Brande

The origins “crostini” dates back to ancient times, when the dining table was not laid with single plates, but the food was served on large trays from which everyone would take what they desired and place it directly into their mouths, or if necessary placing it on a piece of bread.

This use continued until the end of the XVII century:  if you look at the paintings that represent the opulent banquets of the Renaissance, you will notice that the tables were very unrefined.

The piece of bread gathered oils, sauces, various pieces of meat, becoming very tasty and flavoursome.

These were the ancestors of our crostini; pieces of bread covered in a minced meat of  humble parts of the animals.

As the bread was usually quite hard (in fact it was made only two or three times a month), it was firstly used toasted and then soaked in broth or in wine to make it edible. For many years the chicken livers on toasted bread has been a “must” in the starters on nearly all Tuscany tables. They are prepared with many variations and it is very rare to taste two the same.

Typical during all the festivities, this is my grandma’s version:

CROSTINI NERI – THE RECIPE

Ingredients for 6 serves:

  • 500 grams of chicken liver
  • 6-7 sage leaves
  • 5-6 anchovy fillets
  • 1 tablespoon capers
  • butter
  • ½ glass of Vinsanto
  • vegetable stock
  • 250 g white bread
  • salt and pepper
  • extra virgin olive oil

Clean the chicken livers by removing the long white strands and blood and rinse under running water until clear.

Braise the chopped onion in some extra virgin olive oil and one teaspoon of butter. Add the sage leaves and the chicken livers and braise them until they are pink inside.

Add one tablespoon of Vinsanto and when it has evaporated, add a bit of vegetable stock, salt and pepper.

Simmer for at least 15 min.

When cooked, add the anchovy fillets and capers , chop finely with a mixer.

Taste and add salt and pepper and a splash of vinsanto if necessary.

Roast small bread slices, spread the mixture and serve.
