DestinationsTravel NewsTravel Tips New 2025 regulations are coming into effect for travellers in Europe and the US by Florence Cutts April 8, 2025 written by Florence Cutts New regulations are coming into effect for travellers in Europe and the US – Here’s all you need to know For those planning to travel between the United States (US), The United Kingdom (UK) and the European Union (EU) this year, new travel authorization requirements are being implemented, meaning travellers will face new and updated checks upon arrival and departure. Guidance for Europeans traveling to the US has also been recently updated to reflect recent events at the US border. Here is a round-up of everything you need to know: Travelling to the UK? Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) Europeans travelling to the UK from Europe, including those from EU, EEA, and Swiss countries, will need an ETA to travel to the UK for short stays (up to 6 months) from April 2, 2025. An ETA is a ‘digital permission to travel’, authorising a person to travel to the UK. ETAs are valid for multiple journeys over two years or until your passport expires. Travellers can apply for an ETA online through the GOV.UK website or through the ‘UK ETA app’. This currently costs £10 but from April 9, 2025, an ETA will cost £16. When applying applicants need to provide contact and passport details, provide a valid photo, and answer a set of questions. The application result is normally given within minutes, but travellers should allow up to three days for a result. British and Irish citizens as well as people with status under the EU Settlement Scheme do not need an ETA. For more guidance on who needs to apply as well as what an ETA permits, visit the GOV.UK website here. Travelling to Europe? The Entry/Exit System (EES) The Entry/Exit System (EES), while currently not in operation, is expected to start in October of 2025. The aim of this system is to modernize and streamline entry and exit for travellers and will replace passport stamping. It is an automated system which registers non-EU nationals each time they cross the border of any of the following European countries: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland. The EES System affects non-EU nationals travelling for a short stay (up to 90 days within any 180-day period) to a European country using the EES. This means travellers who do not hold the nationality of any European Union country or the nationality of Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Switzerland. Travellers do not need to take any action before their trip as all data will be collected at the external border of the countries using the system. Those arriving at a border of one of the countries using the EES system for the first time since it started will have to provide personal data which will be recorded in a digital file. The passport control officers will scan your fingerprints or take a photo of your face. If you hold a biometric passport, you can use the self-service system for quicker entry. For further guidance on the EES system, check the official EU site here. The European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) ETIAS will start operations in the last quarter of 2026, so currently no action is required by travellers. The EU will announce specific plans for the launch of the system closer to the time. ETIAS travel authorisation is an entry requirement for visa-exempt nationals travelling to any of these 30 European countries: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland. Travellers from these 59 visa- exempt countries and territories are required to have a travel authorization to enter the aforementioned 30 European countries for a short stay. The ETIAS authorisation is linked to a passport and is valid for up to three years. Note that if you get a new passport for any reason, then you need to get a new ETIAS travel authorization. Travellers can apply by filling out the form using the official ETIAS website or the ETIAS mobile application. The application costs 7 euros, but some travellers may be exempt from these fees. The applications are approved relatively quickly, and in contrast to the EES System, for ETIAS, travellers will need to apply for authorisation in advance of their trip to Europe. When applying for an ETIAS application make sure to: check that your passport information corresponds with that of you ETIAS application apply well in advance of your trip check your passport remains valid for three months after your departure For more information regarding ETIAS, check the official ETIAS site here. Travelling to the US? Updated travel warnings to the US Many European countries have recently updated their guidance for those wishing to travel to the US. After multiple incidents at the US border, many European nations including France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom are issuing updated warnings for those wishing to travel to the US soon. These come after alleged visa issues European citizens have encountered while entering the U.S., as well as cautioning LGBTQ+ travellers after the January 20 executive order in the U.S. which states that passports should only be issued “with an M or F sex marker that match the customer’s biological sex at birth.” After several citizens were detained at the border, Germany updated its travel advisory to the U.S. to state that a visa or entry waiver does not guarantee entry to the country. The UK government has issued new warnings stating that “You should comply with all entry, visa and other conditions of entry. The authorities in the US set and enforce entry rules strictly. You may be liable to arrest or detention if you break the rules”. They also urge travellers to contact the US Embassy or a consulate in the UK if they do not understand how these rules apply to them. If you are planning to visit the US from the UK, you must obtain an Electronic System for Travel Authorisation (ESTA) or a visa. To apply for an ESTA, you can go through either the Official ESTA Application Website or the ESTA Mobile app. The fee for an ESTA is $21 USD and is valid for up to two years. For more Foreign travel advice to the USA, read the official guidance and warnings on the UK Government website. April 8, 2025 0 comments 0 FacebookTwitterPinterestEmail
Destination: ItalyDestinationsTravel TipsTrip IdeasWedding Venues Introducing Tuscia: One of Italy’s Best-Kept secrets by Florence Cutts March 4, 2025 written by Florence Cutts Once known as the heartland of the ancient Etruscan civilization, Tuscia is nestled in the region of Lazio in Italy and is known for its rich history, beautiful landscapes, and charming medieval towns. Just an hour’s drive from Rome, the area is graced by mysterious necropolises, medieval hilltop towns, and Renaissance palaces. This is the year for slow travelling: serene getaways off the beaten path, where you can soak up the sun away from the hustle and bustle of bigger cities. Characterized by volcanic soils, thermal spas, and beautiful food, the lush rolling hills of Tuscia provide a fresh and authentic Italian experience for travellers looking for a serene getaway. History Tusica takes travellers on a magical and transcending journey through time, boasting remarkably preserved necropolises, medieval cities, and Renaissance palaces. Etruscan Civilization (9th and 3rd centuries BCE): Tusica reaches back as the heartland of the Etruscan civilization. The Etruscans established beautiful cities including Tarquinia, Vulci, and Cerveteri, as well as many intricate necropolises. Roman Era (3rd century BCE to 5th century CE): The Etruscan cities became part of the Roman Republic which led to rapid urban development. Many of the ancient settlements were repurposed as Roman colonies. Medieval Period (5th – 15th Century): During the Middle Ages, Tuscia was known as the Duchy of Tuscia and became a battleground, leading to a period of decline. This also saw the creation of medieval towns like Viterbo. Renaissance (15th – 18th Century): Under the influence of the Papal States, Tuscia saw great prosperity, with growth in art and culture and the construction of beautiful palaces and villas, which continue to contribute to its beauty today. Orcus mouth sculpture at famous Parco dei Mostri (Park of the Monsters), also named Sacro Bosco (Sacred Grove) or Gardens of Bomarzo in Bomarzo, province of Viterbo, northern Lazio, Italy Modern Day: Today, Tuscia is part of northern Lazio and is a popular destination for history lovers with its well-preserved historical beauty and stunning landscapes. Top Experiences and Attractions Tuscia has many natural wonders for you to indulge in during your visit. Viterbo: Allow yourself to be immersed in the region’s renowned thermal baths in Viterbo, known as the “City of Popes.” Historically, the thermal waters of the spa of Viterbo were used by the Etruscans, who realized the welfare benefits of the restoring waters. Various Popes throughout history, such as Bonifacio VIII and Pope Nicholas V, also enjoyed the Viterbo springs’ healing properties. The beautiful ancient town of Orte, in the Province of Viterbo, Lazio, Italy. Volcanic Lakes: Tuscia is also home to the volcanic lakes of Vico and Bolsena, which were formed in ancient volcanic craters in northern Lazio. Due to their picturesque natural beauty, they have been used by several film directors as filming locations. The nature reserves can be explored via trails, allowing visitors to take in the natural beauty and immerse themselves in the rich history. Cimini Beech Forest: If exploring world heritage sites is more enticing to you and yours, explore the Cimini Beech Forest aka “Faggeta del Monte Cimino,” a beautiful natural reserve and now UNESCO World Heritage Site. The rich forest is host to a variety of flora and fauna and volcanic boulders and allows visitors to meander through the lush forest on foot, horseback, or explore the trails via mountain bike. Civita di Bagnoregio: Transport to another world and explore the “Dying City”, aka, Civita di Bagnoregio, one of the first Tusci villages. A gem perched atop a hill in a mystifying canyon, the city is reached via the main gateway, a narrow pedestrian bridge of 300 meters in length. Previously, five bridges and entrances to the city existed, but landslides caused erosion and just one remains today. The magical atmosphere of the city makes it a unique must-visit experience. Alleyway. Civita di Bagnoregio. Lazio, Italy. How to get there: Tuscia boasts a prime location, offering easy access from nearby cities while immersing visitors in Italy’s breathtaking rolling hills and stunning landscapes—making it a must-visit destination. Direct train routes from Rome make Tuscia relatively easy to reach, taking only one and a half hours to arrive in Viterbo. Although the simple train routes allow for easy travel from various Italian hubs, the region is best explored via car, as many of the small villages and attractions have limited public transportation—plus, this allows for stops to take in the breathtaking views whenever you please! Where to Stay: If you’re feeling inspired to visit Tuscia, (how could you not!) and are looking for a luxurious getaway off the beaten path, look no further than Tenuta di Paternostro Country Estate. An Etruscan luxury, fully staffed, country retreat. A place to free your spirit, nurture your soul and experience your senses with 5 bedrooms en-suite. Nestled on a sprawling 31-hectare equestrian estate, the luxury country house is a fully staffed luxury property offering an unforgettable escape. Destination: ItalyDestinationsFamily TravelNew Year's SpecialSki ChaletsSki Holidays A Week in Alpine Wonderland: Our Perfect Stay at Baita 1697 by Paola Fiocchi Van den Brande January 30, 2025 written by Paola Fiocchi Van den Brande Nestled in the serene hamlet of Pattemouche, just minutes from the renowned Italian ski resort of Sestriere, lies Baita 1697—a meticulously restored 17th-century Piedmontese farmhouse that offers an unparalleled family ski holiday experience. From the moment we arrived, it was evident that this chalet was designed with families in mind, seamlessly blending historic charm with modern luxury. A Warm Welcome and Impeccable Service Upon entering Baita 1697, we were greeted by the warm smiles of Bianca and Pietro, the chalet’s dedicated hosts. Their genuine hospitality ensured that every aspect of our stay was flawless. From organizing daily ski passes to arranging personalized activities for our teenage daughters, they anticipated our needs with remarkable precision. Their attention to detail made us feel not just like guests, but like cherished friends. Culinary Delights: A Feast for the Senses One of the standout features of our stay was the exceptional culinary experience. The chalet operates on a fully catered basis, with meals freshly prepared on-site using local organic ingredients whenever possible. Each meal was a celebration of Italian cuisine, from hearty breakfasts that fueled our days on the slopes to sumptuous dinners that showcased regional specialties. Our family particularly enjoyed the aperitifs by the cracking fireplace, the homemade pastas and decadent desserts, all complemented by a curated selection of fine wines. Luxurious Amenities for Ultimate Relaxation After exhilarating days skiing the vast Via Lattea (Milky Way) slopes (it helped that we experienced sunny days and blue skies), returning to Baita 1697 was a delight. We returned by gondola, which is located right behind the chalet, or you can ski straight down. The chalet boasts an outdoor wooden hot tub on the roof terrace, crafted from local larch wood, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains. Soaking in the warm waters under a canopy of stars, with the crackling outdoor fireplace beside us, became a cherished evening ritual. The heated ski room with underfloor heating and boot warmers ensured our gear was always ready for the next day’s adventures. Cozy Interiors and Restful Nights The interior of Baita 1697 exudes warmth and comfort. The living areas feature vaulted stone ceilings – once a hay barn – plush furnishings, and ambient lighting that create an inviting atmosphere. Evenings were spent lounging by the grand fireplace, enjoying pre-dinner aperitifs, playing board games and recounting the day’s highlights. The bedrooms, each uniquely designed, provided serene sanctuaries for restful sleep. Our daughters loved the cozy children’s dormitory, while we appreciated the privacy of our en-suite room with its own balcony. Fine Italian bedroom and bathroom linen, including comfortable slippers, are made bespoke for the chalet and embroidered with the property’s logo adding a touch of luxury. In the bathroom you’ll be spoiled with a vanity kit composed by organic products hand-made in Milan by By Hands & Herbs. We particularly enjoyed the lip balm and lion balm after a day out exercising in the cold. A Family Haven in the Italian Alps Baita 1697 is more than just a place to stay; it’s a destination in itself. Its blend of historical architecture and modern amenities makes it the perfect retreat for families seeking both adventure and relaxation. The combination of exceptional service, gourmet dining, and luxurious comforts ensured that our family ski holiday was nothing short of perfect. We left with hearts full of memories and a unanimous desire to return to this alpine paradise. Curious to find out more? Click here to read the full property description. Baira 1697 is available for rent all year round. Rental fees start from €18,000/week on a fully staffed, fully catered basis. How to get to Pattemouche Torino Caselle Airport: 110Km Milano Malpensa Airport: 230Km Private airport transfers can be organised. Where to Eat The Owners booked for us a dinner table at Ristorante Misun La Font, situated in an idyllic alpine hamlet above Sestriere, 20 min drive from the chalet. Located in tucked away sleepy village reachable throw a narrow mountain road, not instantly easy to find in the dark winter evening, we were instead pleasantly surprised by the obviously very well known and fully booked restaurant. Great Piedmontese, earthy food, impeccable service. About the ‘Milky Way’ Ski Area The Milky Way Ski Area (Via Lattea) in Piedmont, Italy, is a vast and breathtaking ski paradise that spans over 400 kilometers of interconnected slopes, linking multiple resorts, including Sestriere, Sauze d’Oulx, Claviere, Cesana, Sansicario, and Montgenèvre in France. While the lake itself offers plenty of attractions, venturing out on day trips can enhance your Lake Como experience. Here are four enchanting day trips, each showcasing a different facet of this exquisite region. 1. Bellagio: The Pearl of Lake Como No visit to Lake Como is complete without exploring Bellagio, often referred to as the “Pearl of the Lake.” Situated at the intersection of the lake’s three branches, Bellagio offers panoramic views, elegant villas, and lush gardens. Begin your day with a leisurely stroll along Bellagio’s picturesque promenade, lined with charming cafes and boutiques. Visit the iconic Villa Melzi, where you can wander through beautifully landscaped gardens adorned with statues, exotic plants, and a Japanese pond. The villa’s museum offers insights into its rich history and art collection. For lunch, indulge in traditional Italian cuisine at one of the lakeside restaurants. Savor fresh seafood, homemade pasta, and local wine while enjoying the serene lake views. In the afternoon, take a boat ride to explore nearby attractions. The Villa Carlotta in Tremezzo, known for its art and botanic gardens, is a short ferry ride away. Alternatively, venture to the quaint fishing village of Varenna, where you can explore the Castello di Vezio and its falconry displays. 2. Como: A Blend of History and Modernity The city of Como, located at the southern tip of the lake, seamlessly blends historical charm with modern amenities. A day trip to Como offers a rich tapestry of cultural, architectural, and culinary experiences. Start your exploration with a visit to the Como Cathedral (Duomo di Como), a stunning example of Gothic and Renaissance architecture. Nearby, the Broletto, the medieval town hall, and the Basilica of San Fedele are also worth visiting. Take a leisurely walk along the lakefront promenade to Villa Olmo, a neoclassical masterpiece surrounded by beautiful gardens. The villa frequently hosts art exhibitions and cultural events. For lunch, head to the historic center, where you’ll find an array of trattorias offering traditional dishes like risotto al pesce persico (perch risotto) and polenta. Afterward, indulge in some shopping at Como’s stylish boutiques or the renowned silk shops. In the afternoon, take the funicular railway to Brunate, a hilltop village offering breathtaking views of Lake Como and the Alps. Enjoy a hike through scenic trails or relax with a drink at a café while soaking in the panoramic vistas. 3. Morcote: A Swiss Gem on Lake Lugano For a touch of Swiss charm, head to Morcote, a picturesque village on the shores of Lake Lugano, just a short drive from Lake Como. Known for its idyllic setting and charming architecture, Morcote offers a tranquil escape with a unique cultural flavor. Start your day with a visit to the Church of Santa Maria del Sasso, perched on a hillside overlooking the lake. The church, with its beautiful frescoes and serene atmosphere, is a highlight of Morcote. Stroll through the village’s narrow streets, lined with historic houses and inviting cafes. For lunch, dine at one of the lakeside restaurants, savoring Swiss-Italian fusion cuisine. Enjoy dishes like risotto with saffron and local fish, paired with Swiss wines. In the afternoon, explore Parco Scherrer, a stunning garden filled with exotic plants, sculptures, and pavilions. The park offers a peaceful retreat with breathtaking views of Lake Lugano and the surrounding mountains. Before returning to Lake Como, take a leisurely boat ride on Lake Lugano, soaking in the serene beauty of the region and the charming lakeside villages. 4. Bergamo: A Hidden Gem of Medieval and Renaissance Charm A visit to Bergamo offers a delightful surprise. Divided into the historic Upper Town (Città Alta) and the modern Lower Town (Città Bassa), Bergamo is rich in medieval and Renaissance architecture. Start your day in the Città Alta, accessed via a funicular that offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape.
