Destination: Italy Discover the unusual architecture of Apulia (Puglia) by Paola Fiocchi Van den Brande March 2, 2026 written by Paola Fiocchi Van den Brande Sun-drenched landscapes, silvery olive groves, and endless dry-stone walls — Puglia’s beauty is inseparable from its architecture. Across the countryside and along the coast, you’ll find buildings shaped by centuries of history, climate, and rural life. Each tells a story of resilience, craftsmanship, and harmony with the land. Here are some of the most iconic architectural treasures you’ll encounter in Puglia. The Masseria A masseria is a traditional Apulian farmhouse, often dating back to the 16th–18th centuries. Originally fortified agricultural estates, masserie were self-sufficient rural hubs where landowners oversaw olive oil production, grain storage, and livestock. Built in pale local stone, they typically revolve around a central courtyard and include chapels, stables, and storage rooms. Today, many have been beautifully restored into refined countryside residences and boutique retreats, preserving vaulted ceilings, thick stone walls, and internal courtyards while introducing contemporary comfort. A stay in a masseria is the most authentic way to experience rural Puglia. The Trullo The trullo (plural trulli) is Puglia’s most iconic structure — a small whitewashed stone dwelling crowned with a conical roof. These fairy-tale homes are especially associated with Alberobello, where entire districts are composed of trulli. Built using a dry-stone technique without mortar, trulli were ingenious rural homes that naturally regulate temperature. Their symbolic roof markings and harmonious proportions give them an almost mystical presence within the landscape. The Lamia Less known but equally captivating is the lamia. Typically rectangular and single-story, the lamia features a flat or barrel-vaulted stone roof. Originally used as simple agricultural shelters or seasonal homes, these buildings are minimal, solid, and beautifully proportioned. Today, restored lamie are admired for their understated elegance — serene stone retreats immersed in olive groves and Mediterranean gardens. Restored Rural Farms (Casali & Agricultural Compounds) Beyond the masseria, Puglia’s countryside is dotted with smaller rural farms — often called casali or agricultural compounds. These were working farms built for families rather than landowners, composed of modest stone dwellings, barns, and tool storage. In recent years, many of these properties have been thoughtfully restored, maintaining their rural soul while transforming them into private homes full of character. Their simplicity — thick walls, exposed stone, shaded pergolas — embodies the quiet beauty of Apulian country living. Old Tobacco Factories (Tabacchifici) An unexpected yet fascinating part of Puglia’s architectural heritage is the tabacchificio — the old tobacco factory. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, tobacco cultivation was central to the economy, particularly in the Salento area. These industrial buildings are striking for their large windows, high ceilings, and rational, linear design. Once filled with the scent of drying tobacco leaves, many have now been reimagined as cultural spaces, private homes, or contemporary loft-style residences — blending industrial heritage with modern elegance. Masseria Diso Il Tabacchificio Palazzi and Historic Townhouses In towns and cities, architecture becomes more decorative. The Baroque splendor of Lecce, carved from luminous pietra leccese, showcases elaborate facades, balconies, and noble palazzi. Meanwhile, in whitewashed hill towns such as Ostuni, cubic homes cascade along winding alleys, their bright facades reflecting the southern sun. Palazzo Zimara Lecce by Arch. Centonze Architecture Rooted in the Land From fortified masserie to fairytale trulli, minimalist lamie, humble farms, and industrial tabacchifici, Puglia’s architecture is a reflection of its history and its landscape. Built from local stone and shaped by climate, these structures are more than buildings — they are enduring expressions of a way of life. At Passepartout Homes, we believe that understanding Puglia begins with appreciating its architecture, because here, every stone tells a story. Destination: ItalyDestinationsGift IdeasShoppingTravel Tips The Shopping Guide to Lecce by Paola Fiocchi Van den Brande October 1, 2025 written by Paola Fiocchi Van den Brande Lecce is no Milan, Florence or Rome, with their haute-couture designer boutiques, trendy cocktail bars and international hotels. There are no Prada or Armani stores nor Michelin star restaurants, although there are some which arguably deserve a star or two. Lecce is more about authenticity, farm-to-table menus, slow living and simplicity. I had the pleasure of sitting down with Margherita Caputo in front of a plate of pasta with fresh tomatoes and zucchini. She is an architect who lives not far from Lecce and is Property Manager of Masseria Mauriani in Carpignano Salentino.Margherita walked me through her favourite shops in Lecce, the ones not mentioned in the tourist guides, of course! Ijo’ Design The brand was found by Margherita’s childhood friend, Annalisa Surace. Annalisa creates contemporary and stylish artisanal apparels and accessories using local textiles: coats, scarfs, dresses as well as cushions or jewellery in natural materials and neutral color palettes. Showroom: via Palmieri n. 47-49 in Lecce. Ijo’ Design is also in Ostuni. Artefatto L’Idea in Terracotta Angelo creates artifacts and decorations in terracotta and majolica taking inspiration from the colours, sounds and perfumes of Salento. His ceramics are fun and colourful and include murals, kitchen utensils, key rings, house number tags, pottery, plates, photo albums and much more. His laboratory is definitely worth a visit. The shop in Lecce is now permanently closed but you can still visit the one located in Castro, Piazza del Vescovado 2. Re di Quadri Re di Quadri is the shop to go for original and refined artisanal artifacts; a store where you can take home traditional furnishing such as the ’pumo portafortuna”, a lucky charm ceramic knob which comes in various bright shiny colours. The Pumo or Pomo is a traditional Apulian artisanal artifact originally from the town of Grottaglie and represents a rose bud about to bloom, symbolising something coming to new life. The Pomo is traditionally offered as a good luck omen to someone starting a new business, moving into a new home, starting something new in life. Shop: Re di Quadri, via Vittorio Emanuele II 66, Lecce. Paola Barrotta Hand-made original contemporary jewellery for both men and women. A third-generation goldsmith, Paola worked in Rome, NY, Bologna and Lecce for major companies where she could put her Italian craftsmanship at the service of international maisons. In 2004 she opened her first studio/concept store in Lecce, where you can experience goldsmiths at work. Studio and concept store: Via Malennio 30, Lecce. https://www.paolabarrotta.com/ Punto Verde Vivai Not far from Lecce, in Melendugno, you can visit the garden centre Punto Verde Vivai. Address: Prov.le Melendugno-Borgagne km. 1, Melendugno. Liberrima An independent book store, a wine and food shop, coffee bar and All’Ombra del Barocco wine bar and restaurant located right at the heart of the old town in Lecce, steps from the Cathedral and Piazza Sant’Oronzo. DestinationsTravel NewsTravel Tips New 2025 regulations are coming into effect for travellers in Europe and the US by Florence Cutts April 8, 2025 written by Florence Cutts New regulations are coming into effect for travellers in Europe and the US – Here’s all you need to know For those planning to travel between the United States (US), The United Kingdom (UK) and the European Union (EU) this year, new travel authorization requirements are being implemented, meaning travellers will face new and updated checks upon arrival and departure. Guidance for Europeans traveling to the US has also been recently updated to reflect recent events at the US border. Here is a round-up of everything you need to know: Travelling to the UK? Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) Europeans travelling to the UK from Europe, including those from EU, EEA, and Swiss countries, will need an ETA to travel to the UK for short stays (up to 6 months) from April 2, 2025. An ETA is a ‘digital permission to travel’, authorising a person to travel to the UK. ETAs are valid for multiple journeys over two years or until your passport expires. Travellers can apply for an ETA online through the GOV.UK website or through the ‘UK ETA app’. This currently costs £10 but from April 9, 2025, an ETA will cost £16. When applying applicants need to provide contact and passport details, provide a valid photo, and answer a set of questions. The application result is normally given within minutes, but travellers should allow up to three days for a result. British and Irish citizens as well as people with status under the EU Settlement Scheme do not need an ETA. For more guidance on who needs to apply as well as what an ETA permits, visit the GOV.UK website here. Travelling to Europe? The Entry/Exit System (EES) The Entry/Exit System (EES), while currently not in operation, is expected to start in October of 2025. The aim of this system is to modernize and streamline entry and exit for travellers and will replace passport stamping. It is an automated system which registers non-EU nationals each time they cross the border of any of the following European countries: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland. The EES System affects non-EU nationals travelling for a short stay (up to 90 days within any 180-day period) to a European country using the EES. This means travellers who do not hold the nationality of any European Union country or the nationality of Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Switzerland. Travellers do not need to take any action before their trip as all data will be collected at the external border of the countries using the system. Those arriving at a border of one of the countries using the EES system for the first time since it started will have to provide personal data which will be recorded in a digital file. The passport control officers will scan your fingerprints or take a photo of your face. If you hold a biometric passport, you can use the self-service system for quicker entry. For further guidance on the EES system, check the official EU site here. The European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) ETIAS will start operations in the last quarter of 2026, so currently no action is required by travellers. The EU will announce specific plans for the launch of the system closer to the time. ETIAS travel authorisation is an entry requirement for visa-exempt nationals travelling to any of these 30 European countries: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland. Travellers from these 59 visa- exempt countries and territories are required to have a travel authorization to enter the aforementioned 30 European countries for a short stay. The ETIAS authorisation is linked to a passport and is valid for up to three years. Note that if you get a new passport for any reason, then you need to get a new ETIAS travel authorization. Travellers can apply by filling out the form using the official ETIAS website or the ETIAS mobile application. The application costs 7 euros, but some travellers may be exempt from these fees. The applications are approved relatively quickly, and in contrast to the EES System, for ETIAS, travellers will need to apply for authorisation in advance of their trip to Europe. When applying for an ETIAS application make sure to: check that your passport information corresponds with that of you ETIAS application apply well in advance of your trip check your passport remains valid for three months after your departure For more information regarding ETIAS, check the official ETIAS site here. Travelling to the US? Updated travel warnings to the US Many European countries have recently updated their guidance for those wishing to travel to the US. After multiple incidents at the US border, many European nations including France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom are issuing updated warnings for those wishing to travel to the US soon. These come after alleged visa issues European citizens have encountered while entering the U.S., as well as cautioning LGBTQ+ travellers after the January 20 executive order in the U.S. which states that passports should only be issued “with an M or F sex marker that match the customer’s biological sex at birth.” After several citizens were detained at the border, Germany updated its travel advisory to the U.S. to state that a visa or entry waiver does not guarantee entry to the country. The UK government has issued new warnings stating that “You should comply with all entry, visa and other conditions of entry. The authorities in the US set and enforce entry rules strictly. You may be liable to arrest or detention if you break the rules”. They also urge travellers to contact the US Embassy or a consulate in the UK if they do not understand how these rules apply to them. If you are planning to visit the US from the UK, you must obtain an Electronic System for Travel Authorisation (ESTA) or a visa.
